We bought the reusable Charlie Banana one at Target and while I liked it fine and it definitely holds the poop in, you DO need 2 of them, or an extra disposable one on hand, because when your kid poops (and mine actually did poop in it every single time she wore it) you can't just scoop the poop out and slap it back on...
that being said, I much prefer simply taking the disposable off and tossing the poop, over having to scoop out the stuff etc... No idea how people do cloth diapers... i was ready to quit the reusable thing after a week at the beach....
For our trip to the beach we got the iplay cloth swim diaper for the baby. I brought 3 with us. She never pooped in them so I can't attest to that, but we liked them. They run small though. She has a little junk in her trunk and we had to get the 2T size
I couldn't find one for older LO so we just used the lil swimmers.

We have a couple iPlay reusable diapers and really like them. She uses them almost every day so it is cheaper than buying disposable diapers and I like that I can throw a rash guard on top and use the diaper as a bottom
We CD at home, so we just use an unstuffed bum genius as a swim diaper. So I say reusable all the way. They are pretty cheap, and the disposable ones are so expensive. Plus, all a swim diaper does is catch poop so if your LO doesn't actually poop in the disposable, it's kind of a "waste", KWIM?
We have a "finis" reusable swim diaper in both white and a flower pattern and she just wears those with a rash guard top. I hated the iPlay diaper as she has chubby thighs and the button closure was uncomfortable. I also had to buy a pair of plastic training pants to wear to swim classes at the Y (on top of swim diaper).
ETA: she has not yet pooped in one but that is why I have two.
Reusable swim diapers do better at holding in poop. Some pools do not even allow disposables, because they really don't do a very good job, like the place where we do swim lessons. As long as your child has solid poop, they're really easy and no big deal. You simply turn the diaper over the toilet and the poop plops out. I wash ours in a load with swim suits and towels and hang dry them.
Re: Which is best disposable swim diaper or reuseable?
