Pregnant after 35

Breastfeeding

It just hit me as I'm doing my baby registry that I may not be able to nurse my baby long, if at all. I have high blood pressure and with my third baby I wasn't able to do it for no more than six weeks. I was really depressed. The bp meds were not enough to control but safe for nursing. So I ended up having to go back on one's before the pregnancy and breastfeeding was a wrap. My first two I didn't have high blood pressure. I hate that I have it. I want to nurse.

I am sorry that you have to choose.  No matter how the baby receives nourishment either breastmilk or formula, your health has to come first.  I know it is hard not being able to nurse when you really want to.  Maybe you can try to breastfeed again and if you can't at least you gave it a shot?  I know a few friends that either medically or physically couldn't breastfeed and they really wanted to and it made them feel horrible.  At the end of the day formula isn't the devil and you shouldn't feel bad for things that are out of your control.  Just like how they come into this world- vaginal birth or CS we all just want a healthy baby.  Same with feeding.  As long as the baby is happy and healthy that is all that matters.

  • You are right. I'm hoping that I will be able to but if not, my health is very important and the baby will be healthy with other means of feeding. I always had great joy with nursing because of the bonding, convenience and benefits.

  • I'm sorry you may not be able to breastfeed as long as you'd like, that would be hard I'm sure. I plan to bf as long as I can but of course I know there's no way I can predict whether I'll be successful, especially since I've never had a baby before. I try to be prepared for the possibility that for whatever reason I may have to do formula instead. I hope you will have more success this time but as pp said, at least you can be assured that your baby will get good nutrition from formula if needed. I'll be pulling for you, fingers crossed your bp is more manageable this time!
Me:41, DH:41 Positive for MTHFR mutations- one copy C677T, one copy A1298C. One daughter born on Thanksgiving in 2013. Six losses.
  • It's tough when the choice is made for you.  In the end your kids need a healthy mom above all.  Even with only six weeks your baby would get beneficial antibodies and bonding time with you. FX things work out differently this time.

  • Thanks. I'm hoping I can go at least 6
Weeks. If not, as long as I'm here to raise my kids is all that matters at the end.
