Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Colic vent

DD is 2.5 weeks old and has been fussy and crying all day for a week now. We've been to the ped and he said she's just "vigorous." DH and I spend the whole day walking and bouncing her and I BF nonstop. Thankfully she does sleep well at night but when she is not sleeping or feeding she is having a meltdown. I am worried about keeping my sanity.. Wondering if I should call a helpline just for someone to talk to or hire a part time nanny!

Re: Colic vent

  • Our baby just ended her colic, it is so stressful! We googled remedies. We researched ways to help. When it felt like we would never figure it out, we came across Colic Calm. It's an all natural remedy that helps babies eventually work out all those tummy bubbles. We knew end wa in sight when she could fart and produce drool. Www.coliccalm.com.

Also, babies go through a growth spurt around 3 weeks that could make them fussy, eat more, and sleep less/more!

  • Try gripe water
  • We tried Mommy's Bliss gripe water and it did nothing. I suppose we could try Colic Calm if the ingredients are different..

Mommy's bilss did nothing for us. Colic Calm was a lifesaver with Dd1. She was still fussy but it did give some relief. I really did not find the pedi helpful at all when it comes to colic.

I also recommend Happiest Baby on the Block, the soothing techniques worked really well for us. For swaddling I highly recommend the Woombie, most awesome thing we've used!

  • The Happiest Baby on the Block methods work well for us. My lo was resistant to swaddling in the begining, but now she usually calms down right away. Colic doesn't last forever. Just take breaks when you need to in order to stay sane. There is nothing wrong with putting the baby down for a couple minutes just so you can calm down.

If you feel it would help, call the help line and hire the nanny. You have to utilize other resources when you feel overwhelmed.  Try mylicon after feedings too. I hope this improves for you.

  • We use Happiest Baby on the Block techniques as well as the Woombie. Both do help. I'll check out the Colic Calm. Are the mycilon drops for gas?

I am just freaked out knowing that this may last weeks and even months. I wonder if there are nanny's that specialize in this. Our orIginal plan was for DH to stay home and take care of her when I go start w

Our original plan was for DH to stay home and take care of her when I start work again at 11 weeks, also from home but not sure we can handle this on our own. MIL was all gung ho about visiting but now that this is happening not so much.

  • hi there...i just read your post and thought you'd appreciate to hear from other moms dealing with the same thing. Our little guy is six weeks old and he started his "colic" at about 2-3 weeks old. He also doesn't seem to be overly fussy at night...his most fussy times are 10-2/3pm...but moreover he doesn't do well with transitions...moving from sleep to wake...wake to sleep...in/out of car seat, etc. we find that white noise helps considerably...the bathroom fan, washing machine and a vacuum cleaner app that I downloaded. We also use the bouncy ball...and just recently I've started to bring him to a local chiropractor who specializes in infant/peds...i'm not sure if her help is making a difference or if it's a combination of other changes/activities (e.g. I've also given up dairy and he's now a few more weeks older), but we are starting to see improvement. Baby steps (no pun intended)...but slowly we're seeing some changes.
  • we also used gripe water (mommy's bliss) and gas drops...it's hard to say if they have worked. at the end of the day the problem starts with their nervous system so it's about time for maturity and helping to calm their brains, at least that's what i'm finding. yes, our LO has gas, but i don't think that's what initiates his discomfort, so we're just trying to get ahead of the curve and cut down on things that cause him stress/over stimulation.
  • I can relate.  My oldest child was colicky and the first 6 months were really tough.  She ended up being diagnosed with reflux and was on meds (Prevacid) which really helped a lot.  We had to be really vigilant about keeping her upright most of the time or at least elevated.  My newborn LO is very gassy. I wouldn't say he is colicky (yet) but we use the gas drops and they almost always provide immediate relief though we have to use them sometimes 3-4 times every feeding.

I remember with DD we used the 5 S's...can't recall exactly what they stood for now but we did the swaying motion side to side and we would say Shhhhhh as we were doing that.  It helped!  Soft soothing music also worked well.  Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do to get through the day.  And at the end of the day, take some time for yourself.  Take a bath, watch your favorite TV show, or have a glass of wine!  :)

Yes, mylicon is for gas and I've used Happiest baby on block techniques too. They do help, especially the swaddling and sshhh in the ear.  I think time and patience is the only real cure.

  • I can relate. My 7 week old started that around 2 weeks. Turns out she has a milk/soy allergy. Once we adjusted her diet and got her on meds for reflux and constipation, she became a different baby. Colic doesn't present all day - I would push your doc. We went to a GI specialist.
