Anyone using Alimentum or Nutramigen?

My DS seems to be allergic to the Enfamil and the Pedi doesnt want him on Soy, so we are researching these two. Is anyone using either? It seems expensive too, any feedback? TIA!

  • What signs of allergies are you finding? DD1 had a reaction to dairy for the first 15 months of her life, so we did Soy. We tried lactose free formulas, but they didn't help at all. The only one she was okay on was Soy, we bought Similac brand.

DD1 would get immediate diarrhea (within 15 minutes), puking, a diaper rash, and a stuffy nose if we tried to give her any dairy based products. It was not fun. Eventually she outgrew her sensitivity, pedi had us try WCM at a year, every 3 months until she could handle it, or by 2. If she couldn't handle it by then we were just going to keep her on almond milk.

Why was he against soy formula? If your child truly is allergic to cow's milk based formulas you don't have a whole lot of options. But, on your pedi's defense, a lot of people jump to WCM FF allergies when in fact the likely hood of an actual allergy is (and I am reaching) 10% in infants. Most children outgrow it by ages 2-4. So I could see your pedi's hesitation.

I suggest researching, beyond Google, but into medical research, and talk with your pedi more about it. The more you know, the best decision you can make for your family, and your baby.

  • We use the alimentum, dd has been on it for about five months now. She had a dairy allergy and had bloody stool as a result. Being she had an allergy we were able to get the formula covered by our health insurance. The doctor gave us paperwork to fill out in the office and a week later it was covered. We pay 10 percent of the cost which amounts to 40 dollars a month. We have Aetna so I know they definitely cover it, it's worth asking your pedi for the paperwork. Since she has been on this formula she has not had any issues. The formula is pretty stinky and she does have some nasty poopy diapers. The diapers are not as gross since she started solids, pretty much like reg baby poop. Good luck with whatever you decide!

My little guy has been in Alimentum since about 7 weeks old. He had/has reflux. It was  pretty bad in the beginning.....stomach issues, grunting, arching of back, gas, etc. Thinking was it either reflux and/or lactose issues.

Insurance covers it in full for us with doctor filling out some paperwork saying we tried other options. (We tried Similac Sensitive as well as Advance and Isomil). It is a bit of a run around to get it covered. We were to,d no twice, but the drs office kept insisting that others with my insurance had it covered so I persisted. Turns out I had to call nurse line to get it approved. Weird that it wasn't perscription or medical, but that's how we got it covered.

He's 8.5 months now. He will be on it till he's 1 and then we try transitioning to WCM. The only other thing she has us trying at this point is small amounts of yogurt with his breakfast.

  • Gastroenterologist had us try Alimentum due to milk allergy.  DD wouldn't drink it.  It smelled!
