extreme athlete parent- vent

Let me start out by saying, I am all about health and fitness.  I'm thin, I workout 4 days a week, and I eat healthy (for the most part ;) ) and I certainly plan to pass that on to my kids.  HOWEVER I think there are some extremes.  Theres this dad in my neighborhood that has a little boy about 7 years old and he makes him run laps and practice sports in the field in our neighborhood.  Last year the kid was playing baseball for the first time, and I would see them outside practicing which is great except that the dad was yelling things like "hit the ball damnit"  "you're not good enough"  "you need to listen to me I'vebeen playing baseball for 15 years" etc.  And just being overall nasty to his poor kid.  And the kid was definitely not enjoying it.  I'm not an expert athlete but IMO I think sports at that age should be fun.  He is going to make that child hate sports.  I often see him making him run laps, like today in 92 DEGREE HEAT and telling him he's not fast enough, etc.  Again this kid is no more than 7 years old!!  It's like he's training him for the Hunger Games or something!!   Do y'all think his language is verbally abusive?  Would you intervene?  I think it would be extreme to call CPS, but its still makes my neighbors and I upset to hear him talk to his kid like that.

  • Yeah that's nuts.

I don't know what you're going to do about it though really. Is there anyone in the neighborhood that's close to him that can talk to him about this.

Stuff like this is why I won't sign my kids up for team sports until they're older/ask for it. They're meant to be kids. Get out and play. It's okay to kick a ball without a million instructions.

Not that I know of, all our neighbors that I talk to think he's an a-hole.

  • Do you know what school he attends?  You could try contacting the guidance counselor.

  • While I agree that the stuff he's saying is inappropriate are you sure the kid doesn't want to be out there running?  Our oldest is 5 and she'll run and play outside when it's 95 with no problem.

Yes I'm sure. Running around and playing freely is one thing, being forced to run laps is completely different.

  • That's awful, and yes it's abusive. I grew up playing sports and occasionally would have someone on my team with a parent like that. It never ended well. Either the kid ends up hating himself or he ends up hating his parent.
