Milk transition

Particularly for those with LO who had trouble with milk

We transitioned LO slowly off her soy formula and on to milk. She's been completely on milk since Thursday. She's had diarrhea since we transitioned. I told the doctor this and she said give her 24 weeks to adjust. Since Wednesday night she's been up all night every night screaming. Last night I noticed her pulling her legs up to her stomach and passing a lot of gas. She is cutting a tooth and we've been giving her Motrin at bedtime, but teeth in the past haven't caused this kind of up all night screaming. In your experience does this sound like it could be a milk issue? Would you give it more time or try something else?

Re: Milk transition

  • I would try Lactade milk.  Good luck!

  • When we transitioned our little guy to milk he was very gassy for a couple of weeks atleast while his tummy adjusted.  He went from being constipated to pooing a lot and we ended up with a nasty diaper rash.  I would say it took us until the 4 week mark for his little tummy to adjust.  He is doing just fine with it now.  Im sure it is hard to watch her be so uncomfortable..but I say give her some time and her tummy will most likely work itself out.  We also still did the leg exercises and since it was nicer let him walk around and play outside during the transition..it seemed to help move the gas along a little more so he was as uncomfortable during the night.
  • Could be the milk.  How does she do with other dairy products? (cheese, yogurt, etc)

  • We are starting to make the transition, as well, from soy formula to whole milk by gradually adding milk to her bottles and using less formula. It hasn't been easy for us, either. Our DD doesn't care for it and sometimes even spits it out. We add milk where we can, including her cereal. She doesn't have an issue with dairy, so I believe its just adjusting to the new flavor and bodily reactions. She has been pooping more, too. You are not alone. I know its frustrating. I have been given the advice of trying soy, instead, considering she was on soy formula and is used to the sweet flavor. But I think, since its not a milk intolerance or allergy, I'm just going to bear thru it. Hope it works out for you, too!

  • She's fine with yogurt and cheese.  She doesn't mind milk and drinks it fine, but last night she was up from 1-5 then she napped maybe an hour total.  We're exhausted.  Not to mention she had 3 huge blowouts today.
