Watermelon

I accidentally left a watermelon (uncut) in the car for well over 24 hours.  It must've rolled out of the bag and I only realized it when I couldn't find it in the fridge.  I don't know the exact temp it was last night but during the day its been around 90 degrees.  Would you guys eat it?

Re: Watermelon

  • Hmmm... I probably wouldn't, but I did google it and find this advice:

    1. kim sutkowski says:

I left my uncut watermelon in the car overnight accidentally! the temperature yestedday reached 100. will the watermelon still be safe to eat?

    2. The Watermelon Guy says:

      Kim,

That?s a tough one. Your watermelon might be a goner (sad, I know), but it?s hard to say for sure. My advice when it comes to questions about whether a watermelon is still good is to use the ?When in doubt, throw it out? rule. But first, go ahead and cut it open. If it smells alright, looks alright and tastes alright, then it?s probably alright. If not, you might have to throw it out and buy a new one.

I hope this helps. Let me know if your watermelon passes the smells/looks/tastes test!

I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.

  • I don't think I would eat it. :( In cooler temps, yeah, but 90 is pushing it, IMO. Sad times.

I'm loling that that there is a "Watermelon Guy" to asks these questions of!  I live on the edge (haha!) so I'd probably cut it open and eat it if it doesn't smell bad.  I'm certain that watermelons have made it through at east 90 degrees sitting out in the field before.  They explode if it gets too hot (my grandparents used to farm, including watermelons and this has definitely happened before), so I guess that's why I'd be okay eating it if it smelled alright.  You might give it a go yourself before you give it to G or B though.

  • Ditto lrn - I'd cut it & see how it looks/smells. Unless it's rotten, I'd prob eat it.

  • Ditto to cutting it open and seeing. It would suck to waste all that food if it was fine and I'm figuring it must get that hot outside sometimes.

ditto! I'm guessing watermelons grow outside (right?) and the temps might get rather hot while it's growing - not the same as in your hot car, but I'd cut it and give it a try.
