Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When did or have your LO's begun teething?

My LO is 4 months(as of July2) and he's constantly chewing his hands and fingers and drools a lot as well. I've heard these can be signs of teething but I was thinking 4 month is too young. I purchased a couple of teething rings as well but he hasn't quite learned how to hold something that small and bring it to his mouth for chewing purposes. LOL! It's like he's concentrating hard on hand, eye and mouth coordination right now.

If he is teething what do I do to relieve him in the meantime until he can work that teething ring better? Right now he just gets frustrated and only wants to chew on hands and receiving blankets. :-/

  • My LO just cut her first tooth last week. To me she didn't seem extra fussy, but she does wear an amber necklace, so maybe that helped? She loves chewing on her Sophie giraffe. I would also dampen some wash cloths and put them in the freezer so she could chew on those. She loves that.

  • When LO is obviously trying to gnaw on something and is having a hard time I just wash my hands and let him chew on a finger. It's messy but he's so happy to have a "smart" teether at those times. The rest of the time I just let him gum on whatever he can manage: teether, his hands, his lovie.

  • Our first round was just before 4 months... drooling like crazy, chewing madly on his hands, fussy, and his telltale sign of very restless sleep. We are in round two right now and the poor dude is so uncomfortable! I can see a little tooth peeking through his bottom gums. Very thankful for Tylenol!

  • We think Vivi has started as well and she's usually gnawing on her own fingers, a receiving blanket or any of her toys.  I make sure to wash them if she drops them on the floor because we have a dog.  She'll even gnaw on my shoulder when I'm trying to burp her.  I say let your little one gnaw on what he likes for now.

DD1 was teething by 6 weeks. She didn't get her 1st tooth until she was 7months old. They can start teething long before they cut a tooth.

Whoa! That's early. Makes me wonder when I will see a tooth cutting through.

This exactly! We have a dog and I'm always checking stuff for dog hair before he puts it in his mouth. LO just started gnawing on my shoulder as well.

DS got his first two teeth at 4 months and I wasn't really expecting it! His favorite things to chew on are Sophie and blankets/clothes. Is your LO fussy or seeming in pain? DS had a couple of really miserable days right before the teeth cut through and I gave him Tylenol. If your LO is just chewing and drooling contently I would let him be - he may be teething but maybe not. Teething signs are also just be things babies do normally!

I don't know if this is part of the fussiness from teething but he has become a little more high maintenance when going down for bed. I used to just cradle him and give him a bottle at bedtime and he would easily fall asleep in my arms. Lately he has seemed a little more aggravated at bedtime even though he's just as sleepy. I don't know if it is because at this age he is just more aware of his surroundings and needs to go in a quiet dark room for less stimulation or he's fussy from teething. He used to be able to fall asleep no matter what was going on around him.

  • DS is currently teething, which was confirmed after his 4 month check-up by the pedi. I ended up putting a wet wash cloth in the fridge, and he loved chewing on it. I have teething rings as well, but it's easier for him the chew on his blanket.
