Parenting after a Loss

I am freaking out right now.

Mobile: I am freaking out right now.

So, I just read this article about children taking Miralax, and all I can think is, there's got to be another way. What's wrong with my baby? :(:(:(

https://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/26/us/miralax-a-popular-cure-but-never-approved-for-children.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

ETA: We've done all of the usual things. DD eats at least 2 oz. of pureed prunes or pears everyday, and we avoid bananas and cheese. She'll also usually have an ounce or two of probiotic yogurt, and the rest of her diet is mostly fruit, beans, veggies, and Cheerios, and occasionally pasta, rice, or shredded chicken or beef. In the past few days we've also given her 2 - 4 oz. of pear juice everyday, too. But she hasn't gone since Wednesday, despite having three teaspoons of Miralax yesterday and four today. I'm okay with using it in the short term to correct this problem, but I'd really like to find a more natural way to treat her constipation going forward.

I'm wondering if this isn't being caused by something in my diet? She's still nursing 5 or 6 times a day. We didn't start having these issues until she got through the peanut butter poo phase, though, and really started eating a lot of solids.

Have you considered a lactose intolerance issue? I meant to tell you that part of our solution for Addie was cutting out most dairy, and switching to lactose free products. As much as it sucks, have you considered doing an elimination diet?

  • I cant see your ticker, but going by the amount of times she is nursing, a few days between poos doesnt sound abnormal to me. DS would, and still does at 21m, go 2 or 3 days between poos on a regular basis once he started solids. Is she acting like she is in discomfort?

  • DS recently had to switch to formula is super constipated.  We are give him Karl syrup in his bottles, which several friends of mine swear by.  I know your LO is BF, but is there any way you could incorporate some of it?

I was actually thinking about this last night. I though maybe the coffee I've been indulging in since we started solids might be part of the problem, too?

She's in serious discomfort when she does go, which is usually only once or twice a week. She is eating enough solids in addition to nursing that her poo is ploppable... I'd be okay with less than once a day if she weren't in such pain when she does go.

  • I have no advice.  My son had constipation issues for a long time until he was finally potty trained last spring.  He was prescribed generic Miralax at his 3 year check up and it didn't always work either.  I say just keep her as hydrated as you can...introduce water if you haven't done so already.

  • I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. My SD had constipation issues, so I know how difficult it can be on both you and her. G hasn't had any difficulty really, but if I notice that it's been a day or so since a bm, I will feed her a 34 oz Plum Organics "Just Prunes". That usually does the trick. We also offer water throughout the day. I really hope thing get easier for you guys soon!

Idk on the coffee...coffee usually has the opposite effect for me, KWIM?

  • Do you mix any oatmeal into her pur?es? I was doing this for 1-2 of my DDs meals and noticed she started getting very constipated. As soon as I cut the oatmeal out, all was fine again.

No, she's never really cared for oatmeal. Pretty much the only thing she gets pureed lately is pears, squash, or a carrot/apple/mango blend, the latter two I've stopped giving her just in case!

  • So we definitely dealt with the pooping issue for the first 4 months of E's life. It was a huge deal anytime he did poop. What our Pedi had us start doing was giving him 2 oz. of Gerber pear juice every day. Once we got him into drinking it every day, we noticed a huge difference. It definitely helped him regulate and poop on his own.
