I'm trying to remember from when my hubs joined, but I'm pretty sure he had to pass physical tests before he joined, and also once at boot camp. If you don't pass you're either held there until you do, or they discharge you.
Not a military person, so my info could be off. BFF joined the Navy and was overweight at the time. She signed on with the delayed entry program, and her recruiter worked with her to get her in shape so she'd meet the requirements for entering the Navy.
Of course, he also molested her, but that's a topic for another thread...

WHAT. tell me more about this. did she report him? i heard they are redoing military laws, or something like that, to make it easier for women to disclose abuse, which is rampant (obviously) UGH
I know with the Navy, like the PP said, they will put you on the delayed party when enlisting and you have to be under a certain weight for your height and age to get in.
well what the hell did they do during the draft / vietnam war??? i would have stuffed my freaking face to get super fat and say "oops, sorry, cant do it' lol
They have a minimum height weight requirement, and body mass that you have to meet before you even go to MEPS. my husband is 5'10 can't weigh more than 185 based on his height

haha my dad was drafted, although he was super skinny back then (now, not so much lol) but he had really bad vision. Anyway, he was just sent to Colorado and did a whole bunch of drinking and partying... Really not trying to be disrespectful to those who were actually sent abroad to war, but I think that's basically what they did for people who weren't combat ready...
I know when I went in in 99' you could be Xlbs over the max weight (BMI) for your weight but by the end og basic (13weeks) you had to be within the standards.
Bison (FCS) beats Big 12 Champs Kansas St (24-21)!!!

She did report him, and in true military fashion, he was given a slap on the wrist, reassigned, and the whole thing swept under the rug.
I'm a little cynical when it comes to military. I have great respect for those individuals who dedicate their lives to our country, but the organization as a whole, sucks.

i mean they must enlist too? nbsp;lol. really, help me out here!nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;
I'm active duty, I'm shocked at the OBESITY rate in the Navy. It's a huge lol problem. There is a height weight scale, however they have BCA where they tape you by measuring neck and subtracting that from waist. So a man that's fat and not muscular has a better shot of passing. It's shameful. For women the standards are even lower. I still passed weigh ins until two months ago. I'm obviously waived for pregnancy. I think army is even worse. There is a hilarious fat soldier meme. Flame me, don't care.

Easy when it's outside looking in however the Navy has a higher rape prosecution rate than the United States.

Yup. Unless there is solid proof it is still a matter of "he said, she said". At least in the military an accusation stays in your record for 10-30 years, even if it is not prosecuted. It is a restricted file but you better believe that it is accessible by people that need/want to see it to screen for certain positions.
As for the fat thing, a lot of standards were relaxed at the peak of the wars when they needed people. Now that there is down sizing, the restrictions are getting tighter and there aren't as many waivers. Before, felonies were waiverable, being fat was the least of the military's problems.

Also, there are a lot of dishonest recruiters who will send fatties. It hurts their graduation rate numbers, but their "sent" column looks stellar!
Absolutely. The success of the recruiters is based on how many people they get in, not how many make it through basic or even get through their initial assignment. They just want them in, whatever happens after that...not their problem!

I'm in the military. And you have to take a fitness test before you join. Though some fat people somehow slide through and make it to basic training. They either get in shape there, or are discharged.

I don't think people were nearly as overweight as they are now.
MH is Air Force and I was just saying there's a ton of overweight people walking around base. It's shameful. If they want to force shape I've got a pretty good place to start. If you can't take the time to take care of yourself maybe we shouldn't take the time to train you.

You have to basically be able to complete certain requirements before enlisting.
