Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

18 month sleep regression?

For the last week or so, DS (who is 18.5 months old) has been having the worst sleep at night and at naps at home, too. He seems so restless, tossing and turning all over the place (I know this because I sometimes have to go in and lay down next to his crib). He also has begun crying multiple times a night. Sometimes, he gets up, throws his pacifier out of the crib and cries until either me or DH goes in, gives it back to him, and lays him down.

He has been a good sleeper, STTN for quite some time and that is why this makes this so unusual. I have thought he was suffering from painful gas and I haven't ruled that out as part of the issue but I wouldn't think that would happen every night. Either me or DH is up multiple times a night trying to get him to calm back down. He does not have an ear infection because we just had his 6 month follow-up Friday for his tubes and they were perfectly clear. He has been working on some teeth but has never done anything like this even with his first year molars.

I should also mention that he has been super clingy, throwing random fits every 5 minutes it seems, and generally being whiny. I don't know what happened to my happy, sweet little boy.

Anyone have any similar experiences, particularly with the sleeping bit? I'm ready to pull my hair out!

Re: 18 month sleep regression?

  • No advice just sympathy. We are going thru the same thing with sleep. DD started climbing out of the crib in her sleep sack so we converted her crib to the toddler bed. Absolute meltdown at bedtime. Would not sleep in the bed. She actually fell asleep against the door Friday night. So Saturday I took her crib down and she is now sleeping on the mattress. Past 2 nights have been somewhat better. She is still waking up in the night crying. We just go in and lay her back on the mattress and let her fuss a bit before falling back asleep.

There's a good chance it's teeth. Also, weren't you just saying you were going to get him tested for allergies or try to rule out intolerances? If you suspect gas, I'd figure out the allergy stuff ASAP.

Yes, we meet with the feeding specialist again this Friday. I've always wondered about allergies or intolerances in the back of my mind since DS was also extremely gassy as a baby. Definitely would put my mind at ease if we could rule that out (or in, I suppose).

I'm sort of shocked that your pedi didn't go down this road months and months ago.

If I were you, I'd self-refer to an allergist ASAP.  I wouldn't wait for the feeding specialist.

    Hilarity,

I agree. Unfortunately, we need a physician referral for the allergy clinic at the Children's hospital, which is where I would want to take him. His next well baby visit isn't until August 2 but I'm hopeful the referral could also come from the feeding specialist (who is actually a psychologist) since the clinic she works at is part of the hospital campus.
