Sorry if this has been discussed recently, but I was wondering about breastmilk storage. I read that putting the breastmilk in bags is not good for long term storage because nutrients could stick to the sides. Has anyone heard this or confirmed this? I have been buying the bottles to store in, but that is getting super expensive. I would like a more affordable option, especially since I am about to go back to work and will be pumping more frequently.
Re: Breastmilk storage
This, exactly
I think the mayo clinic is recommending against using ziplocks or bags not specifically for breastmilk? From what I understand, the medela type bags have a coating to prevent leaching... I have also heard that glass is best for storage, somewhere else, but that would take up so much room and be expensive!!
My little bug, Madeline. Born June 2, 2013.
It sticks to the bottles just as much, I'm not sure what the difference would be, other than you'll be spending a boatload more money on that many bottles! Not to mention the huge amount of space you'll be taking up.
I store in the Lansinoh bags too. I freeze them flat and write my dates on top of them. Then I have a plastic shoebox in the freezer and I stand the bags inside it. I put the newest in the back and take from the front.
Its what works for me.
This is incredibly smart! I never thought this through before. I freeze mine standing up and it takes up a lot of room. I just have them in a drawer in the freezer so I'm like fishing through them just to find the earliest date and half the time I give up and just grab the earliest I can see. I think I will do this from now on. Thanks for the idea!
I too looked for different ways to store it. I found the best and cheapest way was to use the freezer plastic baggies made specifically for breastmilk. I too have quite the storage. To help with freezer space- I store mine flat and put them stacked on each other in a gift bag. I was able to get like 6 small gift bags on one shelf and then put them in order by date.
