Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Ms. Independent DD

So my little one is a few days away from 8 months old. She's been into feeding herself table foods for a while now, she enjoys eating by herself and has refused to eat when we try and spoon feed her. We were doing oatmeal and fruits and veggies until she refused to eat oatmeal anymore. I then switched to cream of wheat, thinking she might enjoy it better, but the lips seal up as soon as the spoon comes anywhere near her mouth. When I put food on her tray, she jumps right in feeding herself. (We do a variety of soft foods, diced up and she does well with chewing)

I don't know if it's necessary for her to still have supplements of oatmeal/cream of wheat if she's taking in plenty of table foods. I just don't want her to miss out on any nutrients. Any advice?

  • No, she does not need cereal, oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc. As long as she is nursing or getting formula I wouldn't worry about her not getting the right nutrition.

  • DS was the same way. I started  cooking oatmeal (regular oatmeal, not oatmeal cereal) w/less water, making it really thick. Then I stick it in the fridge which makes it even more solid.  And I give that to DS that way.  It's solid enough he can feed it to himself. I want to give him oatmeal because it is relatively high iron content.

that worked for a few weeks but he then refused to eat the gooey oatmeal.  I also want to give him yogurt as well, so I mix the oatmeal with yogurt, then add his favorite fruit (mango) into the mixture.  I made sure he sees me cut up the mango and add it to the mixture.  He fought the first few days but when he realized he's not getting anything else he stopped fighting.

Nowadays he actually gets really excited when he sees me get his oatmeal and yogurt ready.  He still refuses to be spoon-fed for any other foods.
