Baby screaming/crying when pooping - not constipated

Does anyone else have this issue? My LO is a perfectly happy little girl - except when she poops. She's not constipated (is regular and stools are wet/normal). But she literally does her full on "pain" cry during pooping and while I change her. It's heartbreaking to watch and since she poops often, it's a long drawn out affair each time. She did have anal fissures a few weeks ago, but those appeared to have healed fully now.

Yep.  It'll vary from intense grunts to full-on crying here -- and gets worse at night.  It's so hard -- I tell him it's the one thing I really can't help him with!

Well, it's good to know I'm not alone (though I'm sorry you're dealing with it, too!). Mine has really bad cries - the ones that go silent and full on wailing with tears. It just seems it shouldn't be this hard for her! :(

  • We definitely have this problem going on.  LO seems like he might be getting the hang of things a bit better now though, because sometimes he has poops that he doesn't scream for.  Looking forward to the day when none of the poops elicit screams!

  • My LO grunts like a warthog it's so loud you can hear it throughout the house and he does it all night and every poop I can't wait for the noise to be less intense

Some babies just really really hate the feeling of pooping. it scares them, it feels hot and yucky on their bum. sometimes they can't figure out which muscles to use, the ones to push out or the ones to hold the poop in and sometimes they get it backwards.  They'll straighten out their legs and try to hold it in and then cry about it.  sometimes it helps to be very fast with the diaper change wipe them off part, so they don't feel the hot poopy on their bum so long.  sometimes it helps to bend their legs at the knee and push the knees sort of toward the chest to keep them from fighting to hold it in when they should be pushing it out and it relieves the tension in those msucles easier and they go ahead and poop and get it over with.  luckily they outgrow it no matter what.

All of this. My DD does it too and though its hard to listen to, it's normal.
