Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Ferber question

DD is 6.5 months and I'm going to be doing a little Febering with her.

She is not a bad sleeper for the most part, but I truly need her to be able to fall asleep on her own, mainly for naps.  It is taking 20+ minutes to get her to sleep for her naps, and I have a 2 year old.  I can't keep leaving him downstairs multiple times a day while I try to get her to sleep (we have a security camera down there that I watch him on the entire time, through my phone, so he's safe and normally will just watch TV during that time, but it's still not fair and just not working).

Because she is a decent sleeper I don't expect it to be very hard on her, especially at night. I planned to start tonight and she was so exhausted I literally only had to go in one time, after just 3 minutes of crying.

Anyway, I know naps will be harder for her....my question is, do I jump right in and use it for naps starting tomorrow, or should I try to get her falling asleep on her own for bedtime first? I feel like it will be easier using it for naps once she is used to it at bedtime, but I don't know if it's useless doing it for bedtime if I don't do it for naps....I hope that makes sense.

Re: Ferber question

  • When I did it a few weeks ago, I went cold turkey on all rocking/soothing to sleep. We actually started with a nap, and by day three, she was putting herself to sleep for all naps and bedtime with only about 3 minutes of crying.

Having a two year old as well, I have always actually made sure to get DD2 used to falling asleep with DD1 in the room, so I have been putting her to sleep in the living room so DD1 wasn't left alone, and DD2 could learn how to sleep through all the yelling toddlers seem to love. It has helped with our CIO because she isn't roused up again with DD1 starts shouting or playing loud.

    GL!

Thanks, that is so good to hear!!  I always hoped DD could get used to DS' noise while sleeping but beyond the newborn stage she just couldn't seem to rest with it (maybe boys are louder! lol).  Luckily she has a loud fan in her room that drowns out everything else in the house.

Fans are great! We use one too to drown out all the singing and screaming haha.

I also found once she was established with self soothing, if DD1 woke her up, she know just cries for a few minutes and puts herself to sleep. My favorite thing though is the new STTN thing that came hand in hand with it.

I hope it goes as well as it has in our house! It feels so great to get some sleep myself (as I am on TB at 10:30 at night. Oops) Smile

  • I did this a few weeks ago with my DD and did both naps and bedtime together. I just wanted it to be consistent and not confuse her. I started with nighttime sleep and the next day did it with naps.  The naps are definitely harder but she has gotten so much better. She is able to put herself to sleep and everyone in the family is better off.  Good luck!!!!
