Buy the Rock N Play and bouncy seat or just one?

My daughter wants the rock n play for her baby after hearing everyone rave about it. The new ones have a vibrating option. Is it a waste to also get a bouncy seat? Can the rock n play serve the same purpose or is it more for just napping?

Re: Buy the Rock N Play and bouncy seat or just one?

  • One difference is that the rip sits up high, so its nice for having bedside or couchside and using your hand to rock it, while the bouncy seat sits down low, so you can use your foot to bounce it while cooking or doing dishes. Of course she won't need both, but neither is very expensive and it is nice to have one upstairs and one down. To be honest, we left our rip in the upstairs bathroom for when i was showering, and the bouncy moved about downstairs for  when I was cooking or doing the dishes or going to the bathroom.

My daughter loved both her bouncey seat and the rock n play (I have the original one that does not vibrate). I would say that both a bouncey seat and the regular rock n play (probably cheaper than the vibrating one) are good investments. We used the rock n play mostly for sleeping at night or naps and the bouncey when she was awake so she cute sit up more and look around. Also as she got older she was able to kick and make the bouncey seat rock which she loved.
  • DD loved her bouncy.  We didn't have, nor have a need for, a RNP.

In your shoes I would get her whichever one she is more excited about.  She can always pick up a very inexpensive bouncy on craigslist if she really wants one after LO is born.

The Rock N Play is more for sleeping.  The bouncy seat is for playing.  You need both.

  • I agree to with needing both.

I only had hte rock and play...even before it had the vibrating option...and I never opened my bouncy seat

but that is also because my son loved the swing....so I would say two of the three not all three (although you didnt ask about hte swing I added it in)

  • We had the RNP without the vibrating option. It worked out great---bc DS would sleep in that at night for the first 2-3 months. Even when we tried transitioning him to the crib, he actually got a cold a few nights in and then we went back to the RNP because it elevated him so he could breathe with all the nasel drainage.

Then I used the bouncer, that did vibrate all the time during the day for the first 3-4 months mainly downstairs. I could move it to the living room, to the kitchen when I was cooking and then even to the dining room while we ate. Even if he was sleeping in it, it was great being portable so I could have him in the same room with me.

I say you definately need both.

  • We had both and used them every day for several months.

I see them frequently at consignment shops or on Craigslist so maybe you could consider that to help cut down on costs. You can always remove the covers and wash them.
