Working Moms

Questions

Hello everyone! I am about 13 weeks and just recently secured a teaching job teaching high school agriculture. I am a little stressed about telling my new boss I am expecting. We suffered a miscarriage earlier this year and didn't think we would get pregnant right away, I mean we used protection! But we are very excited and beyond blessed. I have a 9 year old so this is brand new. Do you lovely ladies have any advice? I'm teaching in Texas so I'm not sure about maternity leave. Thank you!

Re: Questions

  • I don't know about Texas but my district is very very nice about family leave, even if you haven't worked 12 months first. I might start with the HR department in your district and find out your options. Maybe have a plan in mind when telling your principal like when you plan to go out on leave and how long you plan to stay out.

    Congrats on your pregnancy!

  • Thank you! I'm going to start with that! I know it's illegal but I feel like they might let me go over this. Oh anxiety, why do you play tricks on me! Thanks for the advice!
  • I work in schools as well, and my advice would be to start at the top. I told the special Ed director and my principals first, before saying anything to coworkers. I also went to them with my plans from the beginning, for scheduling appointments, working until my due date, and how I would arrange to cover my duties. I was surprised how genuinely happy for me everyone was, and they were all wonderfully supportive for everything I needed. Good luck!
