Pregnant after 35

Abnormal results

I'm 37yrs old and almost 14 weeks pregnant with my second child. My other child will be 18 years old in a month. My Phase I screening came back abnormal and I am scheduled for an amnio on July 30th. They said my Downs risk is 1 in 5. There is no family history. Has anyone else had to go through this? And if so how did it turn out for you. Trying to be optimistic, but very scared.

Re: Abnormal results

  • My positive screen was a 1:56 risk. I just took the Harmony test and hope to have my results soon. Positive screens are very scary but it also is something out of your control. Try your best to relax and remember that a 1:5 risk also means there is a 80 percent chance that everything is fine.

I understand how scared you must be. I was told at my genetic counseling session that about 5% of people come back with a high risk but only 5% of those people actually have an abnormality. So do try to stay positive.

You said you have an amnio scheduled, is it not an option to do a blood test  (I think they are harmony or mat21?)

Also just so you are aware Downs Symdrome is not something that has anything to do with a family history. I wasn't aware either because my DH has a cousin with it and we were concerned. It has to do with the cells pulling an extra chromosome which has more to do with the age of the egg.

I hope testing goes well for you.

  • I went through this recently. My ratio was 1:86. I took the mat21 test, that came back normal. It helped me to prepare myself for positive and negative results. Talking to my husband and therapist helped. Try to stay positive...some of the factors they used like age, aren't helpful. You could be healthier than most women your age... Stay strong and be prepared for whatever.
  • I screened positive for Downs but my risk wasn't as high so they recommended a level 2 ultrasound. I tried to just stay positive and not worry too much. My ultrasound showed a healthy baby. Try to keep things in perspective as much as you can and remember the screening just gives you a risk assessment, it's not a diagnosis. Everything could be just fine. Good luck, I'll be wishing the best for you.

  • Good luck to you on your amnio.  I am sure it must be scary, but as PP said - that means there is an 80% chance that everything is ok.  Hang in there and try to keep yourself from stressing out.
