Di/Di IUGR in Both Twins

Hi! I'm currently 26 weeks pregnant with fraternal boy twins. At 21 weeks, I was given the news that both of my babies are IUGR and would not make it pass 24 weeks. My babies have beaten all the odds so far. A week ago, they both weighed 8 ozs. They both have aged, unhealthy placentas which is causing absent blood flow. Except for the lack of growth, they both look normal, hard kickers, good heartbeats, normal fluid around them.

Does anyone have a similar story? I'm looking for advice and any stories. I had believed that my twins would not make it. Now, I'm believing my babies are strong and will make it. Please let me know if there is any hope for my babies.

Both of my boys had asymmetrical IUGR. Their placentas were grade III early in the third trimester and showed increasing calcification at each ultrasound. They were born at 36w and weighed less than five pounds, but they were able to be in the well baby nursery and came home with us on day four. The hospital neonatologist, however, said the birth weights were likely inflated due to the massive amount of fluid I was given during my c/s.

My boys were not diagnosed until 34 weeks, so my story is different. I was placed on bed rest and met with a dietitian to maximize my calories and protein intake. I know it's terrifying to have such a scary diagnosis and I'm so sorry you are going through this stress. My best wishes for you and you LOs.

I'm sorry you are going through this. You are saying they both only weighed 8 oz at 25 weeks? Are you sure that's correct? That is very extreme iugr. How are you being monitored? I'd ask to be hospitalized if you aren't. Absent flow can dangerously turn to reverse flow which can put them into distress requiring delivery. Overall though gestational age is most important for their survival so just take it one day and one week at s time. I'd be asking your doctor a lot more questions if you are unsure of anything. They are the expert know your situation better than anyone on the internet.

Mrs. Alice, yes they are both extreme IUGR which is why the doctors do not believe they will make it. And yes, they both weigh 8 ozs as of a week ago (25 weeks). I was in the hospital for a week, but because of their lack of growth, there is nothing they can do for us as of now. Until they get to a vital weight (400 grams) they will do nothing to save them as they will not make it outside my womb. I'm on bedrest at home for now. I go to the doctor twice a week. My babies have already been in reverse flow, now they are back in absent flow. I asked a lot of questions and the doctors do not know what will happen, other than they don't expect them to make it. The doctors are "cautiously optimistic" as my babies have beaten all the odds, plus there movements and heartbeats amaze them. So, I'm looking for others out there who can give me hope! thanks to everyone who posted!

Wow I am surprised they released you under those circumstances especially since a week is not really long enough to assess a growth increase or not. I had one twin with absent and reversed flow who was iugr and they would not let me go home at all. I had fetal monitoring 3 x a day and u/s 3x week. I was able to get them to 28 weeks though. Best wishes to you and hoping for big growth!

I went to my doctor yesterday and both of my babies grew 2 oz in a week, so they both weigh 10 oz now. YAY! First time my babies had this much of a growth spur in a short period of time. Once they get to 14 oz, they will make plans of them living (instead of dying). My dr sees babies in my future. SO HAPPY!!
