Clueless about baby vaginas

I need help ladies! Even though I have one of my own, I don't know what I'm supposed to do with my daughter's. DH did all of them in the hospital, and even most of them now that we are home while I am recovering, but I'm going to need to figure it out. I know always wipe front to back to keep fecal matter from getting up front and causing infection, but what else? There are so many more nooks and crannies than there are on an intact boy. The penis is SO much easier! And most of my friends have boys.

The very first time I changed her diaper alone she peed, but it came out the wrong side, I'm only prepared for frontal attacks. This one went backward and I had to change her outfit.

We also CD and I'm pretty sure there is a different way to fold the pre-fold for a girl than there is for a boy.

Moms of girls I need all your tips and tricks for caring for vaginas!

I've only got a girl, so I don't know the difference. But I don't do anything special. If it's just pee, I don't use disposable wipes. I just blot with a cotton wipe. If it's a poop, I just wipe, wipe, wipe. Front to back in all the creases. We cd also, but I don't do prefolds. Have you asked the cd board about folds for a girl?
You'll be just fine. Remember, you have one too, so when in doubt, think about what you would do.

  • I found my boys easier as well.  It just didn't seem to matter if poop was everywhere with the boys.  But, even after some very messy diapers with the girls, we haven't had any real issues except normal diaper rash.  Like you already said, the big thing is just wiping back to front.  I don't cloth diaper so I can't help you there.

If it hasn't happened already it probably won't, but sometimes baby girls will actually have some period like bleeding after birth due to a surge of hormones so don't freak if you see some red.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

I know, but I don't get poop in mine. Stick out tongue I guess I"m afraid I'll hurt her trying to get into all those folds.

  • Haha - I went through the same thing!!! I even asked the pediatrician if I was supposed to put diaper rash cream over her vagina too if it is red. (She said I could BTW.) I have been doing two wipe changes for big poops. I use the first front to back to clean the visible poop. Then I use a clean wipe to get the nooks and crannies up front. Changing little girl diapers feels so different though!

K had this and I did freak out! Luckily we were still in the hospital so I was able to save the diaper and show the nurse.

    Good point!

I think it went down within a couple of weeks, but I don't really remember.

FYI, your pedi will also check her down there at her regular appts. E had adhesion, meaning her hole tried to close up. We have to apply estrogen cream and pull it apart a bit every night. It's NBD but was a freaky idea, especially for MH.

  • I've only had a girl, so I can't compare to changing a boy's diaper, but I will say wiping after poopy diapers gets easier when they get a little bigger. I did ask the nurse for clarification on bathing when she was a newborn, bc I was pretty clueless.

  • I felt the same way, even though I am working with the same equipment. I had a totally awkward conversation with the (male) pedi that discharged S from the hospital (complete with his hand gestures and all). He was basically trying to tell ,e that you don't have to worry about cleaning the inner part of the vagina that seems to be so exposed when they are little. I gave him the side eye on that one as I imagined how I would feel having poop inside of my own hoo-ha. I have always made sure to wipe front to back and also very gently wipe the entire vaginal area after she poops.

  • This post made me giggle!  And I'm obviously not the norm b/c I think baby boys are way harder to clean with their wrinkly little balls that seem to trap poop in every single one of their crevices!

Like everyone else said, I always wipe front to back and I also do a little bit of wiping in the actual hole as well just to make sure all of the poop is out of it once I've done the front to back thing a few times (with a new wipe of course).  Have fun!
