Hi there -- Jaundice color question

Hi there June, I am from July 13 and I like coming over and reading your guys board about all the babies that have been outside for a few weeks. My lo is 10 days old now. Her jaundice levels started to rise a day after we were discharged and she had a yellowish tint in her face and her eyes. So we did an ER visit last Sunday and levels were at 13, the next day at 13.8 and two days later at 12.2. The DR was happy with 12.2 and said since she is breastfeeding every 2 hours now and has been peeing/pooping it should be going down, we also do outside time for about 30 min a day. So hopefully all is back to normal but her eyes do still have a yellowish tint and was wondering if any of you had any experience with this and how long before your LO's color went back to normal?

Re: Hi there -- Jaundice color question

  • My LO is 3 weeks. We had to do 4 lab tests before her levels started going down and her risk was down to low. I would say it was when she was a week and a half. Now that your LO is BF she/he will start getting better snd color will slowly fade completely. The more milk equals more dirty diapers which flushes it out so feed as much as possible.

  • Colt is now almost 7 weeks. His eyes are ever so slightly yellow still. The pedi isn't the least bit concerned and said they'll be the last things to lose the yellow tint. They lose the yellow statting at their feet and it goes up to their head so eyes stay yellow the longest. Her levels are really low so I wouldn't worry too much if I were you!

DS and I got discharged on a Friday and had a follow up with the pedi on Monday. By Monday his Billi levels were a 23, 25 is considered critical. My milk took 6 days to come in. No one had told me to count wet diapers so I just kept trying to BF and listened to the "your colostrum is enough" people. I should have listened to my insticts and given him formula but thats not the point.

At his pedi appt Monday we got readmitted to the hospital. Luckily my milk came in that day so between my milk nourishing him and the UV lights we weren't even there 24 hours. It is a scary thing but it sounds like you guys are doing just fine. Keep doing what you're doing. When in doubt, count wet diapers!

  • DS had pretty severe jaundice and he had the noticeable yellowish tone for about a month. If you looked more closely it took closer to 8 weeks for it to go away.

  • Nemo's levels were similar to your LO's. At our two week appt, she was still jaundice enough for a new pedi to question it. I say by 3 weeks it was hardly noticeable. It's also harder to say because my baby is a bit more tanned.

  • DD is 3 weeks and still has a slight yellow to her eyes. Have you given LO vitamin D drops? Her doctor had us give them to her because she ebf'd.

  • My LO had to be put on the billi blanket at 5 days old for 24 hours, she's 4 weeks now and she's just started looking normal color to me in the last week.

  • Thanks everyone!! I can calm down now lol. My ob suggested I take calcium supplements as well as breastfeeding but I haven't so I will be asking the pedi about the vitamin d drops.

  • It's not unusual for jaundice to stick around in breastfed babies for several months. My doctor refers to it as 'breastfeeding jaundice' and said it's not a concern,

  • My LO got up to 13.9 at 3 days old and then it started going down. Her eyes took the longest to lose the yellow but it was pretty much gone by 2 weeks. I made sure she didn't go longer than 3 hours without eating around the clock for the first week and a half.

  • Harper is 3 weeks tomorrow and she still has a little bit of a yellow tint in her eyes... Not nearly as bad... When she hit 14.3 her eyes were soooo yellow!!
