Breastfeeding

Products for sore nipples

In advance I want to thank you for helping someone new to this board and soon to be new to breastfeeding!  (I'm 34 weeks with my first).  I looked at some recent posts and didn't see much on this subject.

I'm working on getting some needed baby and mommy supplies on hand before baby arrives.  As far as mommy supplies, I got some Lansinoh disposable nursing pads and thought about also getting something for sore nipples.  I've seen several recommendations for things including Lansinoh soothies, warm/cool packs, Medela softshells, Lily Padz.  Each product seems to offer something different, but it also seems silly to buy them all.

What did you find most valuable that you feel would be the most important to have on hand in those early days of breastfeeding?  Thank you so much!!

  • Lansinoh soothies were a lifesaver for me!  I also found a hot/cold pack at target that has a piece of elastic attached to it... When I was feeling engorged/sore, I would put the pack in the freezer and then strap it around my chest.  Also a good idea to have a tube of lanolin handy.

  • I don't think I could have successfully breastfed without a tube of lanolin in those first few weeks.  I put it on after every feeding.
  • Third vote for Lanolin.
  • I really recommend motherlove nipple cream. It's the best thing in the world. Better than any lanolin cream and way less messy... I use it for sore nipples and for pumping. It's totally natural. You can get it @ amazon.com. I buy it @ WholeFoods supermarket and it costs $10.00.

With my 2 first kids I used to use lanolin, but @ some point in my breastfeeding/pumping journey with my second daughter I discovered motherlove nipple cream and never went back to lanolin... Now with my 3rd child I got it before giving birth and started putting it in my nipples 2 weeks before my due date just to get them ready. It works super fast and as I said it's less messy and doesn't stain your clothes...

I recommend the whole motherlove products including the drops to increase milk supply.

  • You may want to check the nipple cream link directly....which stays that it doesn't contain lanolin and that lanolin may contain pesticides... HTH

  • I used medela lanolin and motherslove nipple cream. I actually did an experiment where I used each product on a different nipple for a week to see if one was more effective. They both worked great. I liked that motherslove was all natural but I found the medela product a bit easier to put on. I bought one of each for this go around.

I had gel packs last time but never used them. I highly recommend washable nursing pads as they are softer. I really liked bamboobies.

  • The Lansinoh lanolin stains. I didn't know, and I didn't pay good attention and ended up with a thumb mark stain on my favorite nursing tank the first week home. Just an FYI.

My favorite thing wasn't really for nipples- it was the Lansinoh gel therapy packs. I put one in the freezer for cold therapy, and keep one out to heat up as necessary. My set came with a pair of the Lansinoh Soothies- added bonus. :)

  • I loved the soothies and gel pads and would put them in the fridge before use. I also put the first years nipple butter (non lanolin) in the fridge and used that instead of lanolin. Cold olive oil works great , too.

  • Not sure if you can get it in the states, but I use a nipple ointment called "castor equi". It's a homeopathic vaseline cream made by Boiron, the people who make Camilia which I'm pretty sure you can get over there. Easy to put on, doesn't stain, and is about 4 times cheaper than lanoline in Europe.
  • More responses! Thanks, all of this is very helpful, and hopefully is helping other readers too.
