Protein Powders Safe???

Does anyone know if there are any safe protein powders for pregnancy/breastfeeding?

Thanks!

It probably depends on the source of the protein.  IMO, you're better off just eating real food, and if you are looking for protein, eat foods high in protein (legumes, nuts, etc.).  Chemicals are best in moderation, if at all, and I just don't get using them when trying to be healthy when whole foods are available.  Especially if you are considering whey or something that will take its toll on your bones.

  • I usually just use a brown rice protein powder that is organic and only has five ingredients, all of which I can pronounce. But since I had a miscarriage with my last pregnancy, I'm trying to be very careful with what I eat. Think I'll just stick to whole foods I make. :) That way I see exactly what goes in my food.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Some are, and some have warnings.  We normally buy the bag from Costco that is fine, but when I bought some backup from the grocery, I didn't read it carefully.  It has creatine in it, which is a bit of an unknown for pregnancy/breastfeeding, so it warns against it.  I get that anecdote =/= science, but I used the Cytosport brand from Costco my entire first pregnancy (and 14 months of BFing) and DD is a happy, healthy, rather smart, 20 month old.

  • I drink a protein shake everyday I make at home with Dymatize Whey Protein, which has no artificial sweeteners, etc.  They also make an All Natural Whey Protein brand as well.

I normally order my protein from allstarhealth.com because it is much cheaper than anywhere else you can get it, but for some reason right now their website is down.

  • It depends on the ingredients, you will definitely want to be careful some proteins are high in sugar, I have had both Jay Robb's whey protein powder and Shakeology while nursing, no problems at all!
