Natural Birth

Intro and planning a home water birth

Hi, I am expecting my second child this November. I am planning a home water birth with a midwife. My first pregnancy I saw an OB and delivered in hospital with an epidural, but it wasn't what I expected and I hated the stay in the hospital and I feel it lead to our BF problems.

I have been looking for a FB or community to join to discuss natural water births at home, but I haven't found any. I was wondering if anyone is a part of a group that I could join to get some advice/support while planning this birthing experience.

Re: Intro and planning a home water birth

  • This board is a great resource. I don't know of any specific groups for those planning a waterbirth at home.

That being said, we are expecting LO3 in Sept. Our first two were HB. Only A. was a waterbirth though. When in labor with J., the tub was not appealing at all.

I plan to go with the flow again this time. If I want to get in the tub to labor, that's fine. If I want to wait until pushing to get in, that's fine too. If I never want to get in, that's okay too.

A.'s waterbirth was so wonderful that most of me hopes for another one. The other part of me knows that it doesn't matter as long as LO3 and I are healthy.

    Welcome!

  • I agree about a relaxed approach to the water.  My approach last time and this time is, I at least want to labor in the rented tub for pain relief, but I am not set on having to deliver IN the water. I'm up for whatever. What I want most is slow pushing in a good position to reduce tearing.

PP, you are so close! You've gotten your hb kit, and are your supplies ready? My mw will do a hb at 36w, and others are 37.    I'll start getting supplies together in the next few weeks and need to review my list from last time. I also have a "DH to do" list for when I go into labor that I need to update.

  • Thanks for the replies. I have been lurking here and I am glad that there are other people here having home births. Everyone in my area thinks I am nuts. One coworker even said "You are a nurse, you should know better!" SMH!

I just got the list from my MW for what I need to prepare, and I am so OCD I will probably start gathering supplies soon (23 wks). I will have a home visit at 36 weeks where she will check out the house and give me my box of supplies for the birth.

My one question is, did you all use a rented pool? I am planning on using my large tub ( it is big, like 2 person big) and not turning on the jets. I have watched you tube videos and some are in the tub and some are in rented pools. I just don't have anywhere upstairs to put a tub and don't really want to labour downstairs (family will be here with DS1 and lots of windows).

  • Another good natural birth resource is the mothering.com forum.

We rented a tub bc our bathtub is not conducive to comfort in labor...if yours is larger and contoured at all, it might work. You could try using it soon and see how comfortable you are staying in there a while.
