Placental band

I went for an ultrasound and was told I have a placental band. Does anyone else have this? I have to go in for additional ultrasounds every 4 weeks. My dr sad not to worry, but I googled it and now I'm upset! Argh!

Re: Placental band

  • I'm not familiar with this but my advice is don't overgoogle!! You can really throw yourself for a loop that way. Trust your dr, it sounds like all precautions are being taken, and getting yourself stressed out will definitely not be good for your baby. Or you for that matter. Also don't be afraid to ask your dr questions. If you don't fully understand what's happening ask for a full explanation.

  • De-lurking in case no one else on here has dealt with it --- most of what you find when you google is about amniotic band syndrome --- which is not the same --- a placental band is less serious and not likely to cause any major issues.

Amniotic bands are sticky and that's why they run a risk of wrapping around parts of the baby as it develops, but placenta is not sticky so a placental band does not usually have the same complications.  They will still want to monitor you with u/s regularly to make sure the placenta is not having any other issues developing with it, but your doctor is right -- there's no reason to panic about this.

A friend of mine had this and her little girl is a healthy 4 month old now!  If you are concerned or want a second opinion, you can ask your OB for a referral to a perinatologist.
