Bouncer vs. Swing

Right now I'm registered for both a bouncer and a baby swing. The swing can be either battery operated or has an A/C adapter. To me these products seem like they might be a bit redundant - but I'm a FTM so I'm not sure!

Anyone with experience prefer one over the other? Are they really both necessary to have? The swing should be pretty portable I think (that was one advantage I had heard about the bouncer - you can easily move it from room to room).

Thanks for the input!

Re: Bouncer vs. Swing

  • I felt the same way.  We live in a two-bedroom apartment and it seemed stupid to get both, so we registered for Graco Sweetpeace  Soothing Swing.  It's a 2 in 1.... The seat can come off and is a bouncer.  Also, though we didn't register for a Graco car seat, you could use the car seat in place of the bouncer seat on the swing....like if you come home and baby is asleep in the car seat and you want him or her to stay that way, you can just put it on the swing! I thought it was the best way to get both but to save on space.

  • My DS loved the bouncer, but not the swing. In the end it depends on the baby
  • I'm thinking I'll leave the swing on my registry - it seems more versatile and is also more expensive. If I need the bouncer, I can pick it up myself later without breaking the bank. Thanks for the input ladies!
  • I got both. I didn't like the fabrics used in the 2 in 1 peices that I saw or I would have gotten one of those. I wanted both functions because when you have a fussy baby, sometmes, what worked yesterday, won't work today. Hell sometimes it is minute by minute. I wouldn't want to have one of those moments where the bouncer isn't doing the job and you start swing the babe in your arms and it works. But you have no swing, so you have to swing the baby until it falls asleep. Then you put it down and it starts screaming. Back to swinging.

  • My aunt gave me a bounced and I'm registered for a swing. I figure the bounced will come in handy when I'm cooking and want baby close, etc. The swing will be stationary in the living room.

  • I think it is okay to have both.  They may seem a little bit redundant.  However, it may give the baby more options to have a change of scenery. You can have them both in different rooms.  Also, the baby my prefer one over the other.   Do I think they are both necessary? No. But, I also don't see anything wrong with giving the baby a little variety.
  • We used both with DD.  The benefit of the bouncer is that you can move it around from room to room with little effort.  Moving a swing around depends on how portable it is.  It also depends on the baby, some prefer one over the other.

This. It's not necessary, but it is nice to have many options.

We had both, and my son loved each equally. The swing was great when he wanted to relax, or sleep. And the bouncer he loved to hang out in and play.

This was the same for us.  DD loved her bouncer, but I ended up selling our swing because she wanted nothing to do with it.

As a BTDT mom I have to disagree that they are redundant. Bouncers are easy to move around so you can use them while cooking, showering, etc to keep the baby contained. The swing was a lifesaver for us because we had a bad sleeping fussy baby and the swing was the only way she ever napped. I would use that when I needed to doze a bit we had it right next to the couch or I just needed a break.

  • I think they are both great but not necessary. I will get both because they serve different functions and as garden said what works one day might not work the next. But IF YOU DO GET A SWING, make sure it can be plugged it, or you'll spend a mint on batteries.

  • My DS hated the bouncer but loved the swing. This time around we won't get the bouncer, it a waste money IMO.
I also think you get more use out of a swing but I have heard of kids that hate the swing.

  • We're getting something called a "Mamaroo" to avoid exactly this type of thing. It's got several settings and doesn't have nearly the spacial requirements of a bulky swing in our home. It's a bit pricey but we're not going big on most other items.
