Stupid Birthday question

I'm somewhere in the middle of "Eh! It's a first birthday so who cares?" and "ZOMG, my child's first birthday will be epic with pony rides, a cake from Charm City Cakes and I've hired Rhianna to jump out of the cake and sing happy birthday." 

We're having his party on the beach and I originally thought I would do a beach theme with buckets as favors to the other kids and beach colored decorations. And cakes/cupcakes like below. Then, I was thinking about how he likes Goodnight Gorilla so much that maybe I should do a Gorilla/zoo theme but would that be stupid on a beach? I'm sure I could figure out how to make gorilla cupcakes or something. Which should I do?

    I like the beach theme!  Awesome idea on the party favor too.

     

      You could always do the Gorilla theme next year.

    I love the tanning bears. Beach theme for sure since that's where you'll be. You can do goodnight gorilla next year since I'm sure he'll still love that book. One of DDs favorites when she was a baby through her 3rd bday.

    My other stupid question is do I make a smash cake or do I just make a special cupcake. A smash cake would be no extra work, really. Another site had some teddy grahams in those gummy life savers like they were in inner tubes. I thought I wasn't going to get into this but here I am getting sucked in! First birthday 4 eva!

    I would just do a cupcake but maybe make it a little different. I'm making a cake, cupcakes and giving DS his own cupcake. I don't think he needs a huge one but it's up to you.
    I love the teddy in a lifesaver on some blue frosting. Too flipping cute.
