past hair dye use

So my concern and question are the following: i have used hair dyes for the past 5 years, the last time i dyed my hair was two weeks before i tested positive on my pregnancy test i actually tested five days before my period. I always use the black dyes from garnier, loreal or nice and easy. I did NOT color during my pregnancy. I have read several reports on hair dyes, some stating they can cause problems such as cancer while other reports state they cannot be sure and studies prove to be inconclusive.
Well, i am worried now and will not be coloring my hair anymore but I am worried about the damage i may have done to myself and worry that it may have affected my baby past use.
Has anyone here ever had an issue from past use and are your babies healthy???any feedback will help calm me down please....

  • I think you and baby will be ok. You cannot go back to the past and undo it anyway. Sounds like you are anxious and zeroing in on the hair dye.

Look at it this way, some women of our grandparents generation drank and smoked while pregnant, and doctors told them not to gain much weight. Then they were put under anesthesia to give birth. Their kids turned out ok and run Fortune 500 companies now.

When you are pregnant, so much is out of your control. You could do everything "right" and still have a premature infant. Like my mom did with me.

Not sure if you believe in a higher power, but I found great comfort in prayer while pregnant. Hope you can find peace about this.
  • Past hair dye use will have no effect on your current pregnancy. If it would, doctors would be warning their patients years in advance not to touch hair dye if they were TTC. Also, talk to your OB. Mine is fine with me coloring my hair during pregnancy. When you "research" your concerns, don't forget to look at all angles, and avoid looking at "worst case scenario" results. Oftentimes, those are the results of extenuating circumstances that are nothing like your own. Your baby will be just fine with regard to your concern!

  • Thank you both for your comments, both brought me some piece of mind. Honestly, I do not know why I am so worried about this now. I did ask my OB if I could continue to get my hair dyed and have my nails done acrylics and he said it should not be a problem. The only thing he didnt want me to keep doing is eating sushi because of high mercury levels in certain fish....
I guess reading the scary inconclusive research online scared me into not wanting to dye my hair and worry about the awful cancer risks it carries....sigh.
