Good NICUs in the area?

I am a high risk patient, due to a short cervix and a coworker suggested I find a doctor associated with CHOP and if I go into preterm labor to deliver there, but it's kind of a hike to drive to CHOP. I'm afraid of not making it to the hospital in time.  Is anyone aware of hospitals in the south jersey area that have a great NICU?

  • virtua voorhees has a great NICU and is top notch. In addition the pediatric program is part of CHOP. Not sure where you live but it is on Rt 73. Great hospital, high risk program and maternity.

  • totally agree with the last poster - I'm a FTM pregnant with twins - we chose to go to Virtua because of the NICU just in case we need it.  As a part of the "Parents of Multiples" class that we attended at the hospital we were able to go on a tour of the NICU and talk to the nurses.  I was always nervous about my girls needing to be in the NICU, but after seeing everything and meeting some of the staff I was at such ease thinking that even if they need to go there, atleast they are in amazing hands.  My girls are due in a few weeks - and so far it doesn't look like we'll need the NICU...but again...atleast I know they'd be well taken care of.

If you need a reccomendation to a dr that delivers there - I suggest Garden State OBGYN - its a big practice, but all the Drs are great there.

     Hope this helps!

  • Great!  Thank you.  I am supposed to deliver there (it's my first pregnancy with this new OB/GYN group) and I wasn't sure how their NICU was.  I haven't toured the hospital yet. It is about 45 minutes from where I live, but I have heard nothing but good things about the hospital.

My last delivery was at Kennedy in Washington Township and it was anything but a good experience.

  • I delivered at Virtua in Voorhes right after it opened and loved it.  The Drs. there are wonderful and like previous post mentioned they are associated with CHOP.  We've been to the pediatric ER with my DD and they also have CHOP Drs. in the kids ER.
  • A little late but I also think Virtua Voorhees is amazing. I had DD there and everyone was so great. There is a hospital that is much closer but I insisted I had her there. It was part of the reason I picked the OB I did. Also, when Bailey got pertussis at a month old, our pedi sent us to the ER. I went to Voorhees because I knew it was the better hospital. We ended up being there for a week with her and all of the nurses, doctors, and the rest of the staff were amazing!!

  • I live in Twp and delivered t virtua too in December. jack spent 25 daysin their nicu which is  level 3. we were very happy with the drs, personal room, nesting option and security. our only issue was consistency of care from nurses. we resolved this by speaking with the charge nurse and requesting the same nurses when possible.

  • I loved the doctors at Virtua, but also had problems with the nurses. Everything leading up to the delivery of my daughter was great, even the delivery was awesome. The following 4 days...horrible.

  • My twin boys were in the NICU at the old Virtua (4.5 years ago), and I loved it. I have 6 month old twin girls who were in the NICU at the new Virtua in Voorhees, and I REALLY loved it! I don't have anything bad to say. The doctors, nurses, everyone were really exceptional. And, they couldn't have taken any better care of my daughters. Seriously, they cared for them so well it really touched me.
