Hi, ladies. I just found out about this board a few days ago. I never really looked at many other boards on The Bump but now that I have, it definitely seems like they've got most things covered! I have spent the last 2+ years on the Secondary IF board.
History: DD was conceived naturally after trying 3 months and I realize now more than ever what a miracle she was. When I was younger, I always thought I?d have 4 or more kids. I?ve always loved children and could not wait to get married and start a family. I went through my fair share of ?Mr. Wrongs? before finding DH. We got married in 2008 when I was 31 and he was 32. We waited about a year before trying to get pregnant and we were blessed that it happened pretty quickly, and that I had a perfect pregnancy and delivery. Around her 1st birthday, we decided to start trying again (Aug 2010). After about 6 months, I made an appt to see my Ob/Gyn to ask his advice. He put me on Chlomid for 5 or 6 cycles before referring me to an RE. At that time, all our tests had come back normal. I was having regular periods, ovulating, tubes were clear and DH?s sperm was good. We tried 4 IUIs in 2011-2012 ? all BFNs. We took a short break at the end of 2012 so we could wait to pick up DH?s medical insurance this year (he has better coverage for IF treatments than I do). In January, we tried an IUI cycle with injectables ? another BFN. The original plan was to try 3 cycles with injects/IUI but after the first one failed, we changed our plan.
We made the decision to try IVF in February and started our first cycle in March (protocol was Lupron, Follistim and Menapur). I produced 2 follicles and my RE recommended cancelling. We had to settle for another IUI ? another BFN. The next cycle, I had a cyst on my right ovary and we were forced to take a break. In June, we went for IVF attempt #2 with Chlomid and Follistim this time. I produced nothing, nada, zilch. The ultrasound tech said jokingly, ?it looks like your ovaries are on vacation?. I was devastated. It wasn?t a joke. This is my life we?re talking about. I?ve been trying for 3 years to give DD a sibling, while most of my friends have had 2nd and even 3rd children. I go to a big clinic so I don?t get to see my RE unless I schedule an appointment. When I go for my monitoring appointments, I see the phlebotomist, ultrasound tech and one of 6 nurses. Some of the nurses are better than others, but the day I found out I had not responded yet again, I had the nurse with absolutely no empathy. She just told me bluntly, ?I?ll call you this afternoon but this cycle is going to be cancelled.? I told her I would like my RE to call me. We played phone tag for 2 days. When I finally got to talk to him, he said he didn?t recommend trying anything else. There was a long pause and I said, ?What do you mean?? He explained that my FSH was between 17-18 at the baseline appt for my last two monitored cycles and that elevated FSH is indicative of diminished ovarian reserve. I asked if there was a different protocol we could try and he said he didn?t think anything else would work any better for me. Essentially, he was giving up on me and I was pissed.
I took a few days to process everything and got a recommendation from a friend to see a different RE with a private IF clinic for a second opinion. We met with him last Saturday and the first thing he said after I briefly reviewed our history was, ?you know you need to use a donor egg, right?? While DH and I had discussed this possibility, my previous RE didn?t even mention this option. The new RE didn?t receive me records in time to review everything the other clinic had done so we have to go back to see him next week after he?s looked at everything. But basically, he gave us the impression that using a donor egg is going to be our best chance for success.
As I?m sure all of you know, using a donor is a big decision, both emotionally and financially. I think for us, the financial part is going to be the hardest. We had to put ourselves on a tight budget in order to finance the $11,000 IVF package we got this year. We never actually used any of the services included in the package so we can convert it to a donor package but that?s an additional $10,000. At this point, we?re just trying to hold onto hope that the new RE may have an additional recommendation after reviewing all my records and doing additional testing.
Thanks for listening and for those of you that responded to my original post about using a donor for secondary IF. I hope to learn from all of you as DH and I decide what?s next for us.
A friend just shared this quote with me yesterday and I thought it was worth passing along.

Re: Intro - new to this board
Welcome to the board! I'm sorry you have had such a hard road. Many of the women here have DOR (myself included) and plenty of ladies here are using DE. You will find lots of support here.
I think it's great you were able to convert your IVF package to DE.
Great quote, by the way.

Thank you and I'm so sorry for all you have been through as well. I wish boards like this didn't have to exist but it's so helpful to know that we're not alone. I will keep you in my prayers.

First, welcome to this board!
It's been a great resource and source of support for many of us. Using DE's is difficult, especially when you realize there are no guarantees in this process and as you've stated there are both emotional and financial considerations...I know for myself, accepting DOR as a diagnosis took several failed rounds with my OE's first. However, hindsight being 20/20, I wish I had moved onto DE's sooner, especially given my age. That said, everyone's journey is different and you have to do what you are most comfortable with.
Sorry you have to be here, but you are certainly welcome.
Me: AMA, DOR, undetectable AMH, carrier of SMA, MTHFR homozygous C677T, high cytokines, low IGg B cells, Factor XIII V34l mutation, High Anti-Phosphatidylethanolmine, borderline hypothyroid and mildly insulin resistant.
MH: No known issues, aside from MTHFR.
Recommendations from RI: LIT, Humira, IVIG, Lovenox, Baby Aspirin, Folic Acid, Low-dose synthroid and Metformin.
Currently taking: Pre-Natal vitamins, Foltanx, Low-dose synthroid and Metformin.
When cycling also taking: Baby Aspirin, Lovenox, Humira and IVIG.
TTC since 7/11/09..with medical intervention starting in 2010, including 4 failed IVF's and 6 failed IUI's...only "success" was a chemical pregnancy in 11/2012 (credited to use of DE).
FET #1 (11th cycle) on 8/23/13 = BFN.
FET #2 (12th cycle) Transfer of last two (day 6) donor egg blasts on 1/22/14 = BFP, EDD = 10/10/14 (please stick little BOY!)
My favorite breed:
***PAIF/SAIF always welcome***
Welcome to the group. Hearing the diagnosis was the worst part for me but I had a great team around me. I can't imagine what you went through- I'm sorry.
Im also DOR and in the middle of a DE IVF cycle. The money part is hugely difficult but the emotional part was even harder for us. We are all here if you have questions.
Thank you very much!
