Adoption

One Day

I have always wanted to adopt since I could remember, and I just recently had a baby girl who is now 3 months old, which has really got me thinking about the adoption process.

I have been lurking at some comments and notice that it takes years sometimes before everything is cleared and set n stone.

I don't know whether we want to do it domestically or internationally at this point, but I do know we want to adopt in the 3 to 7 year old range.

I have heard that you don't want to mess with pecking order with kids ages, so I assume we won't be adopting for many more years to come, since I have a 3 month old and plan on getting pregnant one more time before adopting.

How many years before we plan on adopting should we start the process? Why did you chose domestic or international? Advice?

TIA!

  • My husband and I have many friends who has adopted overseas, and a lot depends on your requirements (age, sibling groups, special needs). A child from 3-7 tends to be quicker to place because there is less demand for older children unfortunately. For talking with friends, I think starting the process 2 years in advance is a good rule of thumb for international. We wish we had started sooner ourselves! On the other hand, there is a great need to foster homes domestically, which is usually how people adopt older children. This process takes the time to become a certified foster parent, but you are usually placed with a foster child/children quickly after becoming certified. A lot of that also depends on the state you live in.

  • We chose domestic because some of the international laws require the adopting parents to stay in the counrty for a certain amount of time. We don't want to be away from our two children that long. Our daughter has special needs and her schedule is important to all of us.

  • If you pursue domestic adoption, it's hard to pinpoint a timeline. Your home study could take weeks or months. You could be matched in weeks or years. It will depend on a lot of factors and how you go about it.

International wait times can also vary, and can change over time. You can always contact an agency and get ballpark numbers.

FWIW, our domestic adoption took 10 months
