Just started to TTC baby #2 and I am still breastfeeding my 16 month old. Does breastfeeding make it harder to conceive? Also, could breastfeeding deplete the nutrition for baby #2?
Breastfeeding can impact your ability to conceive, but it doesn't usually require weaning in order to become pregnant. Has your period returned and are you ovulating? If your cycles have regulated, start charting your BBT to determine when and if you are ovulating. That will let you know if you need to space nursing your LO a bit to reduce the frequency of prolactin release to help jump start ovulation.
If you are ovulating there is no reason to stop nursing LO on demand.
Breastfeeding while pregnant is safe and does not take any nutrition from the fetus. Your body will make the fetus its primary responsibility, and you will need to eat well and take care of yourself to keep up your energy.
Breastfeeding can induce mild, but harmless teeny contractions. Some mothers find that nursing while pregnant is less comfortable, and milk supply can and often does drop. Some mothers and babies choose to wean during pregnancy and others nurse straight through and even tandem. Nursing while pregnant and tandem nursing has many benefits:
The toddler can relieve engorgement if necessary and can help keep up your milk supply if baby 2 has trouble nursing at the start. The toddler also gets a second dose of colostrum which has many health benefits.

I don't think much more needs to be said on top of what PP said, but I bf through my entire second pregnancy and am now tandem nursing. It can definitely be done.

I nursed DS1 until he was 25 months and I was 35 weeks pregnant. Being pregnant made nursing a bit harder at times...my nipples were sensitive periodically and I was more tired but other than that, no negative effects. I weaned DS1 because we were both ready and DS2 came at 39.6 and was 8lbs!
I guess im a case where bf did affect my pregnancy. I was still bf DS when i got pregnant and my hormones in the beginning of the pregnancy were super low and i was at risk for miscarriage. Drs said it might be from bf. Fortunately everything leveled out eventually, especially after i quit bf at 20 mths.
