Does anyone know how much its going to cost us to have a baby? I am going to the Fairview Hospital in Wyoming, MN... I am just looking for an estimate... If anyone can help that would be wonderful...

Thanks,

Re: Costs???

  • If I remember correctly after insurance we paid about 2800 out of pocket.

  • It kind of depends on your situation and insurance coverage.  My insurance covered my delivery at 90% and then I was doubly covered by my husband's insurance, so his insurance picked up most of the rest of the 10%.  Other factors that vary costs greatly: hospital in network or not - using a midwife vs. an OB - vaginal vs csection - natural vs epidural - length of stay.

FWIW - I think the total bill on mine came to around $15000 - I had a 24hr labor, with an epidural, started with a MW and they had to call the OB in, I was admitted for about 48hrs after delivery.

  • It will vary greatly depending on your insurance situation.  My sister has an HMO and paid $300 total.  I have a deductible plan.  I paid 3 separate bills for each delivery (hospital, physician, and anesthesiologist(epidural)).  It totaled around $2,100 out of pocket each time.  Contact your insurance provider.  They will be able to explain deductibles and total out of pocket expenses.

  • Our total bill was $23000. After insurance we paid about $2000.

  • Our total was 33,000. After insurance, I paid about 2,500, I believe. I was induced with epi. Cared for by midwives but delivered by NICU team and in for 5 days total most time was predelivery. Call insurance to see what your family out of pocket max is and just plan for that to be on the safe side since the costs vary so much.
  • The best idea is to call your insurance company to find out what is covered and what is not covered...ie hospital choice, epidural or other drugs, length of stay at hospital, and post delivery care are just a few to name. I did this way in the beginning of my last pregnancy so I had an idea what the insurance would cover from beginning to end.

  • As the PP have mentioned, it's all going to depend on your insurance and then the type of delivery you have.

  • Depends on your insurance and how delivery goes. My normal vaginal birth was 14,000. We paid 2,000.

  • Everyone is right about talking to your particular insurance company.  One thing to add: when talking to them, be sure to ask about costs for the baby's medical bills in the hospital, too.  For example, if you do a circumcision, is it covered? How much do the pre-check out baby pediatrician visits cost?

Our little guy spent his first night in the special care nursery for minor complications and we about a $1000 for him....even though my insurance covered almost everything for my delivery and care, his care was a different story. We hadn't factored that in.

  • I paid 4,000 total. 2k is my max out of pocket for each my son and I.

The total bills for my delivery were around 17k. My son's were over 50k because he spent a couple of weeks in the NICU.

Not to be a Nervous Nelly, but this is something else to think about before you opt for the Wyoming clinic vs. a hospital that has a NICU/PICU available in the unlikely event that the need arises.  The last thing you want to do is be away from your baby if it does...

  • In addition to asking your insurance provider about coverage, your OB should be able to tell you how much they charge for each type of delivery. Mine actually had a form I had to sign at my first appointment that detailed the charges for a vaginal vs. c/s birth.

  • It really does depend on your insurance. FWIW, I just delivered in May, at UMMC Fairview, totally uncomplicated vaginal delivery, no epidural, with a midwife and I think we will end up paying around $1800 or $2K out of pocket after a total bill of around $10,000.

  • I agree with everyone else has said that it really does depend on your insurance. You'd want to contact your plan provider and get the details on your plan info, and if you called the hospital and your OB/Midwife, they could probably give you an estimate as to what costs would be.

It also varies based on vaginal delivery/C-section, and if there are any complications or if your baby needs a longer hospital stay - and of course, nobody can predict most of that in advance. I was told by my insurance that the baby's stay would be covered under my deductible unless he had to stay past my discharge, and if that happened, he would start to incur his own deductible. Fortunately, that did not happen, but if it had, it would have definitely increased our out of pocket costs.

I ended up with four different bills: one from the hospital for costs of the stay, one from my midwife for delivery charges, one from the clinic for the in-hospital pediatrician visit for my son, and one from the anesthesiologist for the epidural. Overall charges I think were around $15,000-$20,000, and I paid around $1500 out of pocket total. I had a fairly uncomplicated vaginal birth, but was admitted to the hospital the day before I gave birth due to PROM, so my stay was a little longer/more expensive because of that.

Also, if you have a boy and opt to have him circumcised, it is usually cheaper to do it in a clinic after discharge vs. in the hospital as part of the stay. We did that, and it was covered under our office visit copay.

  • It really does depend on your insurance.  In all we paid $125 oop, $25 for the midwife, $50 for me, and $50 for my daughter.
