Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Need a little reassurance

We Ferberized about 3 weeks ago and DS has been doing great. Tonight we decided to transition him out of his sleep suit because it's just too hot for him during these summer nights. He moved around a bunch in his crib, rolled over to his stomach and passed out. This will be the FIRST time he is sleeping on his tummy & I'm a little worried about it. He's not crawling yet but at almost 7 months he can obviously lift his head up fine and roll back over. Do any of your LO's sleep on their tummies at 7 months?? I am half tempted to go in and roll him over to his back!!

  • My DS started sleeping on his tummy at about 5.5 months. If he can lift his head and turn it, you just need to trust him!

This. If it is any consolation to you, though, when DD1 started sleeping on her belly, she was like 8 months and I was really freaked out about it that I used to stare at the monitor and go in to make sure she was breathing. Don't worry, your LO will be fine. If they can get themselves into that position, then they can move around enough to pick up their head.

  • DD has been a belly sleeper since the night we unswaddled her arms (about 5 months old).
  • I used to always roll dd over, it made me too nervous. I finally started letting her sleep on her belly when she could move both ways really well and she is sleeping better. I wish i just would've let her do it sooner.

  • DS started rolling back to tummy when he turned 4 months.  WE tried rolling him back on his back but 2 seconds later he would roll onto his tummy again.  He's been sleeping on his tummy since (we still put him "back to sleep" but he rolls over right away).

  • Both our babies have been belly sleepers since 4.5 months. I was worried at first but they are sleeping great and have strong necks. So now my concern is very minimal.

    mine too!

  • Mine's been on his tummy for months now. Most nights, he sleeps with his face directly down in the sheet. It looks a little freaky, but if it was a problem for him, he'd just move his face. I wouldn't stress about it.

DD's been sleeping on her tummy for about a month now and will be 7 months next week. In fact I'm looking at her on the video monitor right now on her tummy :) The first few times it freaked me out too, and I think I flipped her back over the first couple times at least before I gave up. She sleeps better that way now and it doesn't phase me. You'll get used to it don't worry :)

Edit: And she's not crawling either yet by the way but rolls fine either direction.

All of this. DS started sleeping 10x's better on his stomach, and even though it freaked me out at first, he really does love it. He'll flip himself over when he's ready to wake up. :)
