Prevacid help!

My 4 month old was on zantac for over 2 months then when we saw a specialist for her milk intolerance he told us to try and wean off zantac if it didn't work to switch her to prevacid since she would likely outgrow the prevacid soon,

I tried to wean of zantac (didn't increase dose for 5 weeks then lowered dose a tad) FAIL.  Poor thing.  SO I filled the prevacid 1 week ago.  Her reflux was acting up due to the lowering zantac.  But' it's been a week and the poor thing.  She isn't screamy like she is when outgrowing her zantac.

But she is throwing up tons of liquidy stomach acid smelling vomit.  When out growing her zantac she would spit up really chunky thick cottage cheese looking stomach acid smelling stuff so this is different.  She is sleeping nearby and I can hear it coming up and she swallowing it and wiggling about grunt over and over and over,

SO...is this normal for on prevacid?  Should I switch back to Zantac, I still have some and can switch asap.  She was still doing well with it...though she'd need a higher dose now.  Should I wait it out longer?

It is the premixed in liquid.  Kept in fridge.  Was told to give once a day.  I was giving right before breastfeeding because I wasn't told otherwise but then read moms saying has to be on an empty stomach so I tried that tonight.  But, she eats every 2hrs on the dot so I can only give in between that!

Any suggestions??

Re: Prevacid help!

  • Yikes, that sounds awful!

Not too much help here, but DS2 did the Zantac then Prevacid thing for a bit.  He did not have any of those issues (though, as our pediatrician determined, DS didn't really have reflux disease).

But... I EBF also and I always gave it to him during the last feed of the night, between sides.

  • We were put on prevacid 3 mths. Our doctor had us continue zantac for a while 1.5 months before stopping zantac. We did Prevacid in AM 30 min EXACTLY before the bottle. Our little guy would take it in his sleep wakes to suck but goes right back to sleep with paci then I wake him 30 min later before I leave for work and feed him. While we were on both I would give the zantac twice a day at least 4 hrs after prevacid or lunch time, then again bed. We then weaned him off the noon dose then stopped the night time dose later on. Things are great so far! Prevacid worked wonders for us but it did take about 2 wks before it started really working! Good luck!
  • I agree with the above posts about keeping the zantac going until the prevacid starts kicking in.  I've heard it takes about 2 weeks for the prevacid to reach it's full effect. However, you said your son has a milk intolerance.  My son also does and we tried Prevacid and he reacted to the small amount of dairy found in it.  Most babies can still tolerate the Prevacid, but mine was so sensitive, that he did react to it and had to come off of it :(  Now, we do probiotics, which have been amazing and has really helped his reflux, and just zantac.
