Paranoid?

I just left my OB's office after going in to get checked for leaking amniotic fluid. I won't leave you hanging: everything is perfectly fine. However, the nurse made me feel like an absolute moron for even asking to be seen, and I'm wondering if I was being overly paranoid. I realize that discharge is normal in pregnancy, but I was having regularly mucus-type discharge (sorry if that's TMI) accompanied by some kind of watery substance that I had never had before. It didn't smell like urine, and the only other thing I could think of was amniotic fluid. Even though I was pretty sure it wasn't that, I couldn't stand the thought of NOT getting checked out in case there was something wrong. I think I did the responsible thing, but the nurse was especially short with me and even rolled her eyes after the doctor did the "feather test" (takes about 5 seconds) and announced that it wasn't amniotic fluid. Was I being paranoid and wasting their time?

Re: Paranoid?

  • First off that nurse was a twatwaffle.  Anytime you are leaking anything questionable you should get checked out.  I've been in a few times for stupid things and I apologize for wasting their time and each time my doctor says to me "That's what we are here for, that's what you are paying us for."  Better be safe than sorry.  Plus people call all the time for stupid things, IMHO leaking an unknown fluid is NOT stupid.

  • I don't think you should ever feel that way, or anyone should make you feel that way. You had a concern that you wanted to have checked out, it's totally normal. The nurse shouldn't have made you feel that way, and hopefully she was just having a bad day. Try not to let that get to you. I would have done the same thing if I were you. Sorry you ended up feeling that way.
  • Absolutely not! I'm being followed closely by MFM for a bicornuate uterus. The specialists have told me to keep an eye out for any increased/extra watery discharge. You did the right thing. Always better to be safe if you have any doubts! I'm glad everything went well!

    This this this. So this.

  • I agree better safe than sorry. If there was a problem and you didn't go in, could you imagine how you'd feel? I'd never forgive myself. Sorry the nurse was a biotch, but maybe she was having a bad day herself. Let it go and be happy everything is ok.

It's a shame that nurse treated you that way and made you feel like you were wasting their time. I think some of them forget or don't know that pregnancy can be a very scary thing and even if they have heard that concern a billion times it's the first time you are asking it. You did the right thing and you had every right and good reason to go in and get checked out. I am glad that everything turned out fine!

  • Thanks, everyone! Fortunately, I had never seen that nurse before, so maybe that was a one-time thing. By the way, I forgot to mention in the OP that the doctor said sometimes cervical mucus can be really watery. I had no idea.

I completely agree with you. (I think twatwaffle is my new favorite name to call someone. lol.) But it is always better to be safe than sorry. I would rather go to the doctor's for something that turns out to be nothing than not go to the doctor for something that could be serious.

  • What a horrible nurse! I don't think you were wasting their time. That's what they're there for.

  • Sounds like a real douche nozzle to me. I would totally taddle on her arse the next time I see the doctor.
