Adoption

First Home Visit Tomorrow

I posted a intro a couple of weeks ago.  DH and I are in the adoption process with the State of Florida and are starting PRIDE this week.  Just got a call for our first Home Visit so that the State can look for Hazards and do a walk through.  I am so new to adoption that I don't know what to expect.  I feel like everything needs to be perfect.  The room for a child is my scrapbook room right now.  Any advice?  I am guessing they just want to get a feel for space/hazards and us.  Looking forward to getting the process started.

Re: First Home Visit Tomorrow

  • We are licensed to adopt/do respite care through the state of CT.  Our first visit was very much just a, "Ok you have 3 bedrooms and your house isn't falling down in shambles.  Excellent!" type of visit.

The first visit you will probably be a nervous wreck. By the time this process is over, home visits will be almost a non-event. We have quarterly checks, and most of the time one of us is arriving home just as our worker is pulling into the driveway. We are lucky if we make it home in enough time to make sure our naughty dog hasn't strewn dirty diapers all over the living room!

    Good luck!

4/11 Started adoption process for 2 siblings through DCF. 10/12 Found out we are licensed! 12/14 Brought 3 week old identical twin girls home from the hospital.  Could be at least until Summer 1015 til we know if they are forever ours

  • I can't speak to how Florida does things, but I can tell you that our home visit was SO laidback compared to what I had expected and worried over. I kept wanting to clean, clean, clean but my DH convinced me that I was going overboard. I did convince him that this was a great opportunity to do a few little repairs we had been putting off. But the social worker totally didn't notice, I'm sure. Overall, we just straightened up a bit and tried to corral the dog fur. :)  For us, the walk through was just a quick look in each room and making sure we had working smoke alarms.  I have heard that some home visits are looking for more -- like safety latches, medicine locked away, etc. but we didn't get that. Oh and our social worker wanted to see the room that would be the nursery, but she was not at all phased that it only had storage and our treadmill in it at the time. GL tomorrow... hope all goes well.
  • Thank you both.  The visit went well.  She walked through the house and gave us tips and also made time for us to ask questions and explain the process even more.  She looked at the room we would use and liked the house.  I feel much better now.  We go to PRIDE on Tuesday and she said there are 13 other families in the session with us.  She did give great tips for stuff I did not even think of.  I think I need to pick up some good adoption books for helpful tips.  You ladies really are helping me with so much valuable information.  Thank you!
