Swelling of legs

Ok, I tried to find info online but am hoping you MoM's can help me out better.  It seems everything I find is about Singleton births, very little on twins.

I have noticed the last 2 days that my ankles and lower legs are really swollen.  My left ankle is more swollen than my right.  It's not painful in anyway, and I'm positive it's just water retention, but is this something I should be worried about?  I don't want to be one of those crazies that calls my doctor every time I sneeze, so if you suggest calling I will, but if it's normal then I won't worry.  You all have or are going through these same things, so I really cherish your input.

(A little background: I really have no close person to turn to with these questions.  My mom passed away 4 years ago, and was the one person I could always turn to for advice.  My SIL I am close to, but she has 2 amazing daughters, 16 & 13, so is very busy and not always able to talk to answer questions, which I fully understand.  Really, this chat is all I have to turn to for advice or pointers.  I'm a FTM, or rather this is my first pregnancy, I have a 15 yr old stepson who is with us all the time, so more like my "real" son, and he's an amazing young man. I appreciate your help and advice, more than you know!)

Re: Swelling of legs

  • I haven't had bad swelling this time yet but I had it really bad with my first. My doctor had said it was normal as long as one foot or leg wasn't more swollen than the other.

So, if one leg is more swollen than the other, I'd call just in case. Could be a sign of Pree. Also, keep your feet up and drink lots of water.

  • Are you able to check your blood pressure? I would definitely call your doctor and let them know. Better safe than sorry. One foot/ ankle more swollen than the other could be a sign of pre eclampsia. Mine was so swollen recently they sent me to L&D for a Doppler to make sure there were no blood clots. Never be afraid to call your doctor!

  • I've had bad swelling. My OB said its normal unless one is more swollen than the other. She still had me come in to check my bp and for protein in urine just to be safe. I'd call.

I called my doctor and talked with the nurse there.  I explained everything and she asked if I have had any pains in my upper stomach area.  I have not, nothing that would concern me in any way. (The pains I have had I have attributed to gas or just sitting funny, as they lasted just a few seconds and are sporadic and few)  She suggested that it could very well be the humidity (it's been hot and very humid here) and recommended I sit with my feet up whenever possible and to drink a lot of water.

If I do have any pains, I will call immediately thought.  There is a new specialist coming to our clinic that they recommended I see.  They stressed that they don't feel anything is wrong, they are suggesting all MoM's to see him.  He'll do an in-room ultrasound and scan each baby very closely to see that all is going well.  Some sort of Maternal/Fetal nutrition specialist I guess.  Anyway, I do have an appointment set up with him next Thursday.

I really appreciate the feedback ladies.  It really means a lot.  It's times like this that I realize just how much I miss my mom, when I can't pick up a phone and give her a call.

  • Ahh, JoDoc, I hear ya. I went through a multiples pregnancy, which was also my first pregnancy, last year. I'm an only daughter and my mom died many years ago. So I know how exciting this time can be for you but also scary and gosh don't you just want to call your mom and talk to her sometimes!?

With that said, I too had a lot of swelling, even if i was only sitting and stuff. If you are really concerned, don't be afraid to call your doc but if it goes down a little at night or if you keep your feet elevated, you're probably okay. If you get a headache, that is also a sign of preeclampsia so keep that in mind and if that happens, go straight to the doc or ER.

I have found that this board is a good sounding board. Hang in there. Enjoy this wonderful time in your life. I like to think my mom is still watching over me and the babies...i threw so many prayers upward when i was pregnant:"Ok mom, this is scary...give me strength here. I'm all grown up but i still need ya."  It helped! :)

  • It's normal. What you're describing is exactly what I'm going through at the moment. Sometimes one foot is more swollen than the other. Unless you notice a lot of swelling on your feet, hands and face there's nothing to worry about. Just remember while sitting keep your feet elevated and try not to stay on your feet much as it makes the swelling worse. Believe me mine is worse too. Every time I take a shower, I end up with elephant size swollen feet. My doc said all this is normal. Ask your hubby to massage your feet at bedtime as it really helps in reducing the swelling. It works for me all the time. Hope all this helps.

It is normal, but just make sure your dr monitors you closely. I had severe swelling and since this was my first pregnancy, I didn't know what was normal or not. Dr kept saying it was normal as long as my blood pressure was normal. Well the high blood pressure never came so I didn't worry. Well good thing they checked my protein levels because I ended up,with severe preeclampsia and had an emergency c section. Swelling is totally normal, but just remember that it's a sign of pre-e too, so be aware of how you feel and clue your dr in because it can creep up on you! Good luck!
