We are going to the beach in August, and I never thought about it till now but...does DS need a life jacket (in case we lost our grip on him :/  )?  If so, any recs?

Re: life jackets for the beach?

  • I think it depends on the child and if you're going in the water deep. DS1 is a runner so he definitely would be wearing one! We got him a Speedo one from Target for around $30 and it works well for us. We use it a lot. Also make sure it is Coast Guard approved.

We have a life jacket for DS that I've used once at a pond, and it was awkward and more difficult to keep a hold of him with it on.  Since the pond is pretty calm most of the time and not at all deep, I just hold him without the life jacket.  I have seen plenty of other kids wearing life jackets, though, so I guess it's just the parent's preference.

We live in southern california and go to the beach a lot. She loves the water. She did not like wearing a full lifevest but this one does not bother her. As they learn to swim you can take out some of the flotation layers. We always still hold her but this allows her to float and kick her legs.
