Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sucking on fingers

DD has recently picked up sucking on her thumb, and sometimes a few other fingers.  She usually does this to soothe.  Lately she's been trying to get her fingers in her mouth as far as she can.  This has led to two incidents where she's thrown up.  The pedi doesn't seem concerned about the vomiting unless DD shows she's in pain, and she's not.  DD is 3 mo and refuses to take a paci.  I also EBF, and I'm a little concerned since my supply seems to be low the last couple days.  Any ideas how to break her from doing this again?

Re: Sucking on fingers

  • My 5 mo. old does the same with her fingers and would not take a pacifier.  I decided I would try exclusively for bedtime and nap time.  Now she will take it when she wakes up at night and during her naps, it puts her right back to sleep, saved my life!  Maybe try giving it to her when she wakes up at night?

  • My son sucks his fingers too, he will actually suck almost his whole fist on there, gross! I've heard him gagging a few times and I know he's spit up from it too. There's nothing to make him stop, especially bc it is how he soothes himself, I feel bad taking it away from him.

  • If my LO could suck his fingers and thumbs all day long he would be happy as a clam. His hands are always completely shiny from saliva. It's pretty gross but he loves it!

He also shoves his hands completely in his mouth and gags himself but I think he's learning to not do that because I've noticed those moments are getting fewer each day.
  • Your LO will figure it out and stop gagging herself.  Let he suck her fingers - she is self-soothing.  Why mess with that??
  • She isn't aware of how far she can go before it's "too far". That's why she gags. She'll figure it out. My LO is almost 18 weeks and hasn't gagged on her own fingers in over a week. At 3-3.5 months she did it constantly.

This. She can put her fingers in her mouth during naps/ night, but she will cry out for you every time she loses her paci!

  • I'm not trying to push the paci.  In fact I'm thrilled she refuses to take it.

As far as the sucking on fingers goes, it never fails that she will stick the fingers too far into her mouth and then she vomits.  We went through this twice yesterday, and I'm trying to avoid the vomiting instead of the sucking on fingers.  If that is how she soothes so be it.
