One larger?

Hello ladies, I had a u/s today at 6w6d. Nugget a is doing very well measuring right on track and 120hb. Nugget b is measuring much larger at 7w6d. We couldn't hear a hb but could still see the flicker. My re didn't come in to the office today to look at the scans. My nurse said its a little early to tell but it could buff out or turn out to be not viable. She worries about chromosomal abnormalities with what she's seeing. Has anyone had something similar and how did it turn out for you? As long as I go home with a healthy child I'm happy, two is a bonus but one is better than none.

I posted some similar concerns on PAIF. I fear one of mine won't make it. On my u/s today I saw 2 sacs with yolks. I'm 5w3d but one measured behind at 5w the other ahead at 5w4d...I did some googling and found that usually one twin is behind and it's normal but anything over 5 days isn't good...

  • I hope they both make it ok! Good luck!

  • I'd take comfort in her saying it's early to tell, which is what I was thinking reading your post. Our Baby B has measured bigger than his brother for most of the pregnancy but they never said that we risked losing him or that they were concerned about chromosomal abnormalities. We're less than two weeks away from their arrival at this point and all has gone fairly well. Are your twins mo/di or di/di?

  • Di/di I believe. Thanks for responding. I think your right it is pretty early. Whatever happens happens we will just have to ride it out and see.

  • At 7w, one of my babies measured 4 days behind the other (and they are identical). My doctor wasn't concerned with a 4 day size difference even in identical twins, because he said that at that gestational age, the tiniest adjustment in measurement can impact the gestational calculation by several days.  He was also encouraged that they both had good heart beats. 10 weeks later, they're both still doing well.

Size difference is more normal/ less concerning in di-di twins, too.  Hang in there!

OK. Mine are mo/di and with di/di you probably have even more wiggle room with size differences, especially if they're different genders. I have a friend with boy/girl twins who measured differently the whole pregnancy and had a huge weight discrepancy when they were born, both perfectly healthy. The girl to this day, at 8 years old, is the bigger of the two kids and you'd never guess they were twins. Best wishes for your pregnancy!

  • I'm not an expert but I'm confused as to why she would say she's worried about them not being viable or having chromosome abnormalities. It seems way too early to make those calls. We didn't even see baby B that early. It wasn't until 10 weeks we discovered there's two. B has always been a week or so behind A. All of our blood work was normal. They did have the soft markers but the Perinatologist said that's very common in multiples. We aren't worried about chromosome abnormalities because they have not shown any other risk factors.

  • At times, early on, mine measured 4-5 days apart.  My doctor told me that early it was not too big of a concern.  The last few times I've had u/s they have evened out and are now 1-3 days apart depending on the scan.

Also, try to remember while u/s machines are great the measuring is not exact.  Placement/movement of the baby can change the measurements +/- a day or so.  At least that's what our u/s tech told us.

  • Thanks ladies y'all have really eased my mind. At my scan last week I asked about one being larger and he wasn't concerned. I wish we had been able to hear the hb but at least the flicker is still there. He will do the scan next week so I will get his opinion then. Thanks again girls!

  • It is so early - I wouldn't worry.  Hearing a heartbeat is really really difficult at that point.  At 6w6d, I had my first US and the RE almost missed Baby B completely.  We certainly didn't hear hearbeats but only saw the flickers that early.

    Good luck!

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • My Baby A measured a week ahead of my Baby B at about that point. During my pregnancy, they always had measurements within a few ounces. But when they were born my daughter (Baby A) weighed 1 1/2 lbs more than my son (Baby B)...and at 2 1/2 she's still the bigger one.

    Good luck!
