They have classes on Saturdays and I want to start taking L, but I think I am more nervous than he would be. What do I do, what do I wear lol! I need some mommy friends!
I did swim classes at the Y and we both really enjoyed them. My Y has several little dressing rooms which was really helpful. I always brought an extra towel to lay him on and get him dressed/undressed. I usually put both of our suits on at home with clothes over. I would then use the clothes after class, with a fresh diaper. I was a little nervous too but we quickly got the hang of it and had fun. Good luck!
We tried it back in late winter and only ended up going to 2 classes. DS kept getting sick and didn't much seem to enjoy it. Plus I was always having to go alone and it was so hard to get us both dressed/undressed he wasn't sitting up, yet, and I didn't really have anywhere to put him while I tried to get dressed. Most everyone else came with a friend/family member/spouse so they didn't seem interested in making friends. I'll try again next year.
I came in my swimsuit under clothes and DD was usually still wearing her pjs because it was right after her morning nap. I always waited till we got there to put her swim stuff on since swim diapers don't really contain pee and I didn't want a mess in the carseat.
It is hard to get rinsed off and dressed after by yourself, but totally doable. I brought an extra towel for DD to sit on and she would sit on the bench while I got dressed in one of the family changing rooms. This was at a local rec center, but I'm assuming it's similar to the Y. You should go for it! DD loved swim class, and it really doesn't matter if you don't know anybody because you'll be focused on your LO the whole time.
We do classes at the JCC. It's a lot of fun and I just wear a bathing suit. I think it helps stifle some of that fear because you are teaching your baby very important life saving tactics. Case in point, we learned how to dunk them so they are prepared to hold their breaths. Yesterday at the community baby pool, which gradually goes from zero to 2 feet, he fell face first into the water and submerged. I was right with him holding my hand but they're slippery little things when wet and covered in sunblock. He was under maybe three seconds but enough to get a lung full of water. I pulled him out and he was wiping his eyes but no coughing so I assume no water in the lungs either.
I got dressed at home with swimsuit under my clothes so I just had to change dd. The thing that saved us in the change room was an umbrella stroller. Kept it folded under the change bench or against the wall and it helped keep dd contained while I was changing.

We do still go to the pool, just not for lessons.
