The other day, when talking about going to the beach DH said something to DS about "going out in the deep water with Daddy." DH loves to get out where the water is up to your chest (which is pretty high considering he's 6'7"). I said absolutely not, and he basically gave me a look of "that's what you think."
Now tell me (honestly)...am I being crazy mom, or am I totally rational? The idea of going out in deep water with an 18 month old just sounds idiotic to me. What if he lost his grip? What if a big wave took him by surprise while holding DS? What if a rip-tide started pulling them out? DS would be gone. The ocean is incredibly dangerous even to the best swimmers. Am I right in standing my ground?
Re: another beach safety question
In the ocean? You are right!!!
In a calm lake it would be different, but in the ocean I'd rather be overly cautious.
A lake or a pool, meh whatever.
I wouldn't go a bit past waist deep in the ocean though...and I'm one of the least paranoid people on this board.
Have you taken DS to the ocean before? My son is also 18 months and is terrified of the waves, we can't get him within 5 feet of the water, let alone in it. If you haven't taken him before, maybe he'll also be scared and not go in, so it won't be an issue (not that you want him to be scared of the ocean, but it would temporarily solve your problem).
Also, could you compromise? Maybe say that you'd prefer he not take DS into such deep water when he's so young, but waist deep would be okay (or whatever you feel comfortable with).
I completely understand your concern, and my DH would be the same way other than the fact that DS won't go near the water.
