I teach 6th grade. We just got a new student about a week and a half ago. My teammate says she thinks that she is pregnant. We've all been looking at her more closely, but I couldn't see anything today given her clothes. I guess we'll know eventually.
If it's true, I think I'll be drinking a lot more.
Re: My student might be pregnant...
I was wondering and thinking the same thing. Here's one on me!
How awful. Unbelievable.
(((HUGS)))
When I was in the 6th grade, one of my classmates became pregnant. I'd never experienced anything weirder by that time in my life.
He was 16, she was 12.

She said that she was acting very strange on Friday, waiting for all the kids to leave before she stood up, looking around before she got up to turn in a paper, asking other kids to do things for her, etc. and then when she stood up to leave she noticed a bump. She said she wasn't sure, but it's the first thing she thought. We've mentioned it to the guidance counselor, so hopefully we can figure it out.
We don't know her or her family at all yet, since she's so new. I hope she didn't move to a new school because she's pregnant... I hope she's not, too, and was just having a "fat day." She's kind of on the big side, so maybe it just looked that way. I really, really hope it just looked that way!
And I'll be taking you up on that case of wine if this turns out to be true!
12 in the 6th grade? I started high school at 13, 6th grade was more like 10 years old.
Wierd none the less just seemed old for the 6th grade!
::SLAP:: just in case the situation didn't do it strongly enough for you.
jeez louise.
Wow. If it is true, I really feel for you and for you. That is not going to be easy on her.?
What did the?guidance?teacher?say? ?
It was the second half of 6th grade. I was 11 going into 6th grade, 12 at the end...so was she. So were most of my classmates. So are most 6th graders.

We haven't gotten any feedback yet. She met with the student this afternoon, though.
I'm a school counselor, so this kind of situation is not totally out the norm for me. The counselor at your school may not be able to tell you much (for confidentiality reasons), but may be able to tell you if she finds out that the student is pregnant. Hopefully that's not the case.
How good of your team to be on the ball. Someone else mentioned abuse, for sure keep your eye out for signs of that. When I did mental health work I knew of a client who had a baby by her father...at the age of 13. So sad!
I was 11-12 in sixth grade and couldn't imagine going through that. Now a days though it seems to be the norm rather than the exception that kids are having sex that young.
My 2nd step cousin (random, I know) had a baby when she was 13 (pregnant at 12). It was like playing pretend for her. At that age, they just don't get it. Now she is 17 and her mom is raising the kid. So sad...I hope for her sake she's just a little heavy.
Am I the only one who didn't even know what sex was at 12? I don't think I even knew where babies came out!
wow that is really awful. I hope it all works out
Thanks for the perspective. I know she may not be able to tell us much. I hope that she's not, but trying to prepare myself in case she is. She's really withdrawn and came in with terrible grades. She's got some problems, for sure, I just hope that being pregnant is not one of them.
Poor kid. Sounds like she has problems. She's lucky to have you and your team looking out for her. So many kids that I see who move often feel like they have no one to turn to. Hope everything works out for her!
