TTC After a Loss

PSA: Siggies and Avatars for Newbies

Hi guys! I'm sorry to rehash this yet again (I know it comes up often) but I think it's worth bringing up again.

If you're new here please know that TTCAL is filled with amazing amazing women. We are all in different stages of our journey. Some are actively TTC while others are benched for personal and/or medical reasons. Some of us have issues while others don't. Some have living children some do not.

Regardless of our personal situations and where we are in our fight to grow our families (it does feel like a fight some days right?) it can be extremely hurtful to us when we have to see baby/infant pictures in both your avatars and siggies.

BE mindful of your audience. Respect the fact these types of photos hurt and take them down.

Let's keep this safe place.

ETA: Although I appreciate the effort of a siggie warning lately the siggie warnings aren't even enough.

  • You should send this PSA to the Bump.  I swear, they are the worst offenders with their stream of baby ads on the right hand side of my screen.  Usually it doesn't bother me, but every now and again it catches me off guard and stings a little.  Thanks for posting!

    Yup.

I think there's a way to block it. I don't know how to personally but some ladies have done it with success. Maybe someone will chime in!

One thing I noticed on the New Bump was that you could hide your sig sometimes.  Did anyone else see that or am I crazy?  I think it was in where you change your sig, there was an additional box you could check.

That could be helpful to people who post on multiple boards, if it woked and they remembered to do it for posts here.

Yeah I saw that too! I took it to mean that we could chose to change our viewing setting to omit signatures.

That would be awesome! I usually bump from my iPad and burn about 10 calories per post scrolling due to siggys.

Thumbs up on the PSA, Pink C. I smiled at your ute cartoon, btw. Not because of the message behind it, of course, but because who doesn't like a good ute cartoon. ((Hugs)) to you.

Yes, I took it as we could hide all siggys for our viewing, too.

I think just don't have a picture of your gorgeous baby in your sig would work better. If you are going to post on this board then you need to realize that your audience is not your BMB for that baby/child.

You can see your kid at home. We do not need to see them here. We always bring up the analogy of being in a real-life loss support group when some posts a BFP or goes phishing. I think the same analogy works for pics of your children - would you bring your young child to a loss support group for women who had lost children?

    All of this.

I was thinking the same thing...

I see it like this: If you're an active member of TTCAL then you need to understand and show some respect for the ladies who are here. Many of us have no living children and face a tough tough road. We don't constantly need that reminder.

If you're not comfortable with removing the photos then maybe your best bet is to stick to a TTCAL check in on PAL or something similar.

  • This is the exact reason I prefer to mobile bump. As annoying as it is to do, I never have to see avatars or siggys, which on most days is so much easier.

It's hard enough to see baby photos or smiling happy families with kids on Facebook, but here in TTCAL, it is just brutal, especially for those of us still trying to have a child.

But that's the whole point. Why should YOU have to avoid all of it. TTCAL should be a safe place. Why can't people have the decency to respect the fact this sh!t is hard.

This. And part of the issue is that we have had a lot of mobile bumpers who have stuff in their siggys that they have totally forgotten about.

It was in your preferences. I'm not sure how it will work (whether you can hide yours or whether you can hide all).  I also don't know if it would be post specific like that. My gut feeling is that siggies will behave the same as they do now where if you make a change it shows on all posts that you have.

  • I would love for ladies to stain saying "I didn't realize it was hurting anyone" it is. There is probably someone daily who is bummed when they see your adorable kiddo every single time you post. Just don't. If you want to be a regular and a part of the loss community then be aware and sensitive. Lots if us don't have babies at home.

You should send this PSA to the Bump.  I swear, they are the worst offenders with their stream of baby ads on the right hand side of my screen.  Usually it doesn't bother me, but every now and again it catches me off guard and stings a little.  Thanks for posting!

    THIS!!! They are the worst!!

  • As a newbie to this board I have a question on this! I dont have any pics in my sig but does the same go for tickers? I totally understand how these things can be painful for people to see...should we remove our ticker?

    TIA

  • I 100% agree, I don't understand the need, why go through the effort of siggy warnings or possibly accidentally hurting someone who is having a bad day! This is a safe place!

For the most part it's the visual and the cuteness. I don't read tickers unless I'm looking directly at them on purpose. They are easier to scroll past.

  • I posted a question and it says I posted  but now I cant see it...sorry if this is a double post.

As a newbie to this board I am wondering if the same goes for tickers showing childrens ages, etc? I can totally understand how even mentioning a child can be hurtful sometimes depending on your situation. Just wanted to clear that up too! TIA!

  • This is why I lurked for a few days, read the blog, and deleted my siggy pics before I started posting.  I wanted to be a welcome member of the community, not hurt others.  I will probably add pics back in when/if I graduate from here, but I intend to wait a few days first so that anything I have posted will be a couple of pages back.
