Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Feeling guilty

So I'm feeling incredibly guilty and hoping for advice or support. I EBF my dd2. She's just over 6mths now. I went back to work when she was 3 mths and started pumping during the day. I've had supply issues ever since.

Well we had to supplement for the first time last week. She was one bottle short at the end of the day. Even this weekend she went on an eating frenzy and my breasts were drained. She was crying while sucking so I fed her a bottle of formula. She sucked it down like she was starving.

Ultimately my DD is getting about 90 breast milk and supplementing as needed. But I feel so guilty that I'm not able to feed my baby! Breast feeding is really important to me. But with pumping I'm just not getting the same amount of milk. And I can't let her starve.
Feeling sad......

Please don't feel bad or guilty. From day one I had problems breast feeding and had to start DD on formula within a week of being born. I also felt guilty, but DD is brilliant and funny and hitting all of her milestones right on target. I think The Bump can be pretty judgmental when it comes to formula, disposable diapers, etc. you're doing what's right for your baby and that's all you can do!

  • Don't feel sad, you are doing an awesome job! She is still getting BM which means she is still getting all the benefits of it. You have to do what is best for your baby and it sounds like you are. Have you started solids yet? That might also help with her appetite (but is not meant to replace BM or formula).

  • Don't feel bad! At least you are still able to bf some. I had to stop when dd was 4 1/2 months because I went back to work full time and wasn't able to pump at all. I felt really guilty about it too but she is healthy and happy and growing like a weed which is what matters! I think you need to do what is right for you and your baby and you are! Be happy that your lo is healthy and happy and that's all that really matters!

  • I could have written this entire post. I am not quite to supplementing just yet but I think I'm close. My stash sucks now. We're on vacation for 10 days so I hope all of the bfing will help a bit. I always think to myself that at least I was able to bf this long. Good luck mama!

  • She is still getting all the benefits of BM. You are making sure she is well fed, so you are doing everything just right. Nothing to feel guilty about!

  • Don't feel guilty, you have to do what you have to do for your baby. She is still growing and thriving and that is what is important. I know how you feel though at 4 1/2 months DD decided that she didn't have time to nurse anymore. She would look around and push off... I thought it was just a strike but as the weeks went on she would just continue to look around and push off.

  • I felt SO guilty when I stopped pumping and we switched to formula, but I just couldn't keep up with the pumping. My ds is doing perfectly well, and he's been on formula for about 3 months now. The thing that made me feel better was telling myself that formula isn't rat poison. Meaning that it's not going to hurt him, and while it's not his perfect milk like breast milk is, he'll be ok. You have to do what's best for the family. Don't feel bad!
  • Chin up! You're doing great, and have given your baby such an amazing start. I think I'll be joining you soon on this guilt trip, breastfeeding is pretty important to me too and I'll be going back to work soon. But as said previously she's still getting benefits from the breastmilk that you do give her, and there's nothing "wrong" with formula to keep her full and happy!
  • Have you tried fenugreek? It's working for me! :)
