So I guess amber teething necklaces work...

Mobile: So I guess amber teething necklaces work...

DD is getting all four of her top teeth at the same time! And while she was certainly extra clingy last week, her sleep hasn't been any worse - and in fact, a little better - and she's still her pretty cheery self. I mean, who knows if it's the necklace, but it's cute, so I'm leaving it on.

  • I bought it from this seller on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/BalticLaraShop

Elinor was "teething" for months before we saw anything, and then got both bottoms at the same time. GL!!

  • That's good to know!  I'll be ordering one soon to have when the time comes.

ETA: Ok, I just googled these and the first article I ran across says not to use on children younger than 36 months. Is this the wrong kind of necklace I looked up? https://www.amberartisans.com/amtene.html  I see them on young babies all the time, so I must be looking at the wrong thing here.

ETA (again): Nevermind.  I found the info I was looking for.  The beads for young babies have to be rounded to be more comfortable on baby skin.  That makes sense.

  • DH and I joke when G's having a bad day, it's because she is without her necklace.

While we observed that the necklace did help with DD's drool when she was younger, I did some more research and decided that IF amber teething necklaces work (which they do seem to for many moms), the mechanism is by unknown amounts of succinic acid or other unknown substances leaching into my LO's body...

We opted to instead only use FDA-approved drugs (tylenol, advil after 6mo) with known doses and safety studies and took DD's necklace off when she was around 6 or 7 mo.

Surprisingly, she had two top teeth come thru without us noticing any symptoms at all -- and that was without the necklace.

I honestly think 'teething' gets a lot of hype as being a cause for baby's fussiness, but often clingy and fussy is related to a developmental leap (including 'invisible' mental leaps) rather than teething.

    This.

Of all the things we've tried with D, Advil is the one that has made the most difference. And it's easy to jump to 'it must be teething' when we don't know what's the matter with them. I thought DS was teething for three months before he actually cut his first tooth (at 8.5 months)...
