Not adjusting well to Sippy Cup

A little over a week ago we started adjusting my DS from bottle to sippy cup.  He was still breastfeeding for morning and night feeding with 2 bottles in between.  We have tried a few different sippy cups and have stuck with what he seemed to have most sucess with.  He has gone from drinking his entire bottle to never finishing and screaming at the sippy cup often. What would take a 1/2 hour to finish bottle we'll sit with sippy for an hour and still have 1/2 left.  :(   It's not going well. Over the weekend we also phased out his morning breastfeeding (only has evening left which I wanted to phase out this weekend).

Any suggestions?  I'm afraid he isn't getting enough and the screaming feeding sessions are getting to me :(    This morning was the first morning he woke up about an hour early and I was afraid it was because he was hungry but yet he again only ate 1/2 the sippy.  Not sure what to do.

Any suggestions for another sippy to try?

Re: Not adjusting well to Sippy Cup

  • Have you tried straw cups?  DD did not do well with any of the sippys we tries, but she loves her straw cup and took to it easily.  We have the Nuby ones.  The older style is easier to drink from (we've gotten them at Walmart) but she can use any of them now.  They don't leak even though she throws/drops them on the floor often.

Not sure how old your LO is but my guy didn't seem ready to transition until more recently and he is almost 15 months.  We first started with the soft top sippy cups because they are more like a bottle nipple and then he got pretty good with those and now we are working on the traditional hard top sippy cups.  But he still has an issue with drinking milk from the sippy.  He will drink water and juice from the sippy but milk has to be in a bottle.  Im working on it with him but I think sometimes when you force the issue it just doesn't work.  THey will transition when they are ready.  But I guess that is just my opinion....I haven't been that hard core on stopping ALL bottles at one year like some people.

  • My hubbie and I bought 3 or 4 different kind of sippy cups and my son wanted to have nothing to do with them. One day I was watching how he was using the sippy cup and he was treating it more like a drink with a straw in it. So I went to Babies R Us and got him some Nubby drinking cups with the straws in them. They are still spill proof and my son uses them all day every day. It only took him one or two tries to get the hang of them and he loves them now. He only has a bottle at nap time and sleepy time. Let me tell you how much easier it is now that I can give him a sippy cup and continue to do whatever I was doing. I do of course monitor him and never leave him in the room with his sippy cup by himself. Sometimes he drinks a little to fast and chokes a bit, but he is getting much better at that too.....

  • Dare I admit that my 19-month old LO still gets his milk from a bottle?  It's true.  He drinks water from a straw sippy throughout the day, but his milk (plus Pediasure with fiber) have to be from the bottle.  I've decided to pick my battles.  He won this one.
  • Could it be that the milk isn't warm enough?

Whew!  I don't feel so bad then.  My 15 month will drink water out of a straw sippy with no issues.  For the original poster, I taught my daughter how to use a straw by having her mimic me.  It took a couple days, but it worked.  She won't use any type of spout sippy cup.  It has to be a straw one.  Try it if you haven't already. However, she refuses to drink milk out of a sippy.  She'll only drink it out of a bottle.  I still give her a morning and evening bottle because she doesn't like yogurt and is hot and cold on cheese depending on the day.  All I can say is to keep trying, but sometimes it's not worth fighting over at this age.  It will happen at some point.

  • We love our OXO straw cups.  DD didn't take to sippys.

Indeed it took her about a month of consistant straw cups for her morning feeding before she would drink the whole bottle.  Now she does.  A little slower, perhaps, but that is OK.  She holds it herself and we just keep handing it to her ever 5-10 minutes.  And I didn't worry about her not finishing the bottle.  I figured she would make up for it later in the day.

  • Our pedi suggested regular cup. We sometimes do that. Requires parents help or it will be all over though. He does way better than with sippy.
  • Thank you all for all of your input.

I meant to put it in my original post, but forgot. My son is 12.5 months.  He has been taking water in sippy for about 2 months (he doesn't drink all that much water but he will pick up the cup himself and does drink it).

We have picked up several cups and I stopped to get a Nuby Straw cup this afternoon. May also try warming his milk a little more incase that is the issue.  He seems to be doing alright overall, but as I get rid of his last feeding and replace with sippy I'm worried he won't get enough each day.  He was a late eater and so I don't think he is getting enough soley with food. We are working on getting him to eat more but he gagged on any solid (besides puff like food) until about a year. Now he is willing to try things, but quantity doesnt' seem like it would be enough to replace a bottle.

  •  My guy did well with straws when he was adjusting from the bottle.   he also really liked the NUK sippy with the soft nipple.
