Helmet?

Has anyone's LO had to wear a helmet to treat a flat spot? We just had an appointment with a craniofacial specialist yesterday, and it looks like DD has mild/moderate plagiocephaly. The doctor said we could try the conservative approach (more tummy time, etc.) or order the helmet, but that if we do want to do the helmet, now is the time (DD is seven months). We have to decide today or tomorrow.

I really wish our pediatrician had referred us earlier!! DD is a little delayed in terms of motor development...we just started working with an early intervention specialist. She (DD) hates tummy time and prefers to sleep on her back, which is a big factor in the head flatness.

If you don't mind sharing, I'd love to hear about your experiences with the helmet, or your decision not to treat with a helmet. Thanks!

  • I was the one who posted a few days ago. While I don't have any experience yet (we get them in a week and a half) we ordered helmets for both of my twin boys. One has a very mild case and one is more moderate to severe. The specialist we saw explained to us more the issues our boys could have if we didn't fix it...sports helmets and hats not fitting correctly, more importantly glasses not fitting correctly because their ears are symmetrical. To us, a few months of them wearing a helmet (at a time that they won't even remember it) so that their heads could be nicely shaped is worth it!

  • We decided not to use the helmet on our DS (he had mild to moderate plagio @ 6 months) and were happy with our decision. IT was very expensive and required a lot of follow up.  The Doc left it up to us and said it was purely cosmetic in his case and wouldn't cause issues w/ developement/learning etc. Also his hair would cover it and it would improve as he matured.  I can honestly say that it was not noticeable at all after he hit  18 months (maybe if you really felt his head while paying close attention/and his hair was wet hehe).  Good luck with your decision!
  • Thank you everyone! Your responses are really helpful.

I will check out the thread from the other day. I used to be on this board a lot, but alas, the twins keep me busy all day and I haven't been on in a few weeks :-(. I wish The Bump would improve their search function so I could look these topics up!
