My little boy will be 7 months at the end of the month and he is not bearing a lot of weight on his legs. Today I took him to the doctor and he seemed a little concerned, but when he checked him out he said everything with his bone structure, muscle tone, etc. looks fine. He tends to point his toes when he does stand but will only bear weight for a very short amount of time. Even in his jumperoo he doesn't usually stand flat footed but curls his toes and he doesn't really jump but sways side to side. The doctor said to practice with him and if he isn't doing so in a month to bring him back and physical therapy would probably be suggested. This worried 1st time Mom is looking for some help/advice. Thanks
Re: 6 1/2 month old not bearing a lot of weight on legs
I have never had a pedi tell me that bearing weight on legs at 7 months or even 8 is a cause for concern and physical therapy. That is really early to evening be standing at all. Some babies don't do this until 9-12 months...I would get a second opinion.
DD1 didn't start standing until 10 months, and DD2 isn't anywhere near sitting up yet even. But she is crawling. I would not be concerned just yet.
My daughter had low muscle tone (low normal, actually) and did all her gross motor late. She eventually walked at 20 months. She is now just about where everyone else her age is and will be totally caught up, I am certain, by 3.
I cannot remember when she began bearing weight, but is your son behind on other things, like did he have a late head lag or is he late sitting up? Does he hold his head center, or does it sort of fall to one side?
If you are really concerned, you could always consider a consult with a neurologist, just to put your mind at ease.
Otherwise, you could just wait and see -- I have found that I am much less anxious with number 2 than I was with number 1. The first baby is always worrying you about something.
She's not talking about standing, she's talking about bearing weight. Very different thing.
